Thursday 6th March.
It would have been our 54th Wedding Anniversary today. So many happy years together, which I’m trying to dwell on, instead of thinking of the lonely years ahead without John. What am I talking about, I’m anything but lonely, but I just miss him so much.
Well, what’s been happening. Helen was at London last week visiting Rory and Ian and had a good time. She also visited Ian’s mother, who lives in a pretty village like the ones in “Midsomer Murders”. Brought me back something from the Tate - a model wooden hand which the bairns have been enjoying trying to draw, as they can move the fingers around. Forgot to mention Stephen came last Friday and made my meal. Salmon with parsley sauce with new baby potatoes and vegetables. I really enjoy his visits..He cleared up, washed the dishes and everything, just like his grandpa used to do, bless him.
Monday, Chris came to take me to hers for lunch and on the way, went to Shona’s wee shop at Port Seton and bought another photo album and a baby card. She has some lovely stuff. Then went to Lavender’s Blue at Longniddry, which is very expensive, but interesting. Some unusual antiques.
Tuesday, Helen took me to ENT to collect my new hearing aid. What a difference with a digital one! Everything is so clear and there’s even a button to shut out background noise! It’s much neater too and it’s grey -to match my hair!. Good Old NHS!.
Went to look for trainers on way home, but couldn’t find any that fitted properly. Bought some food in Marks (quite extravagant, but very tasty). Must try to lose weight as my back and legs are very sore, but have to keep moving.
Wednesday, Margaret came in morning, then Rita in afternoon. She was saying Alex is missing their wee dog terribly, as he was so used to taking him for walks.
I have a bit of a cold today, which is unusual for me. Was going a wee walk along to Dick’s but thought I’d better stay in. My friend Isabel is coming this afternoon, so I’m looking forward to that as we have a lot of common interests.
What a nice surprise! Isabel brought me lovely blue irises and golden carnations as a thank you for finding some vintage music for her.

Mother's day
Sunday 2nd March
Friday was the usual routine, shopping, hairdo etc but Arthur took me instead of Dick. He’s off every Friday now, so it’s nice when he helps me out like that and has his breakfast with me sometimes. Didn’t do much in the afternoon but went to choir practice where I enjoyed singing, but what a night it was. There are no lights when we come out the vestry door, so we can never see a thing and when we were coming down the church drive, some of us were nearly blown over. I think I’ll start taking a torch with me or those of us who are old and decrepit will have to make other arrangements. As John used to say to me “You should be able to sing by now, you’ve been practising long enough!”
Saturday, I was at the coffee morning with Joyce and Dick, but no seats left beside our friends However it was fine.though Joyce likes to be beside those who know her best as they understand her problems and all make a fuss of her. I bought books, marmalade, a tea loaf and won a prize at the tombola (A bottle of washing up liquid). Rita wasn’t able to come because their wee dog, Sandy was at the vet and the news was bad. They’re both pretty upset as they’ve had him for thirteen years. Bobby and I went to see John in the afternoon. The polyanthus and pansies Bobby planted for me in the Autumn are beginning to bloom and the daffodils are peeping through. The roses I’d brought were very pretty, cream, bordered with white, but no matter how lovely his grave looks, inothing could ever replace what he meant to me. Better stop for a minute.
Sunday, Mother’s Day
First thing this morning, Margo phoned to wish me “Happy Mother’s Day.” John had booked a surprise weekend for their 20th wedding anniversary at the Barony Castle Hotel near Peebles and had arranged for the Aunties to babysit. She said she would call in tonight on her way to play at a charity concert at the Royal Musselburgh. Kay came to take me out to lunch with the boys. We went to Merryhatton Garden Centre, which is lovely, with a beautiful shop and tearoom. The view over the fields and across to Fife is amazing.. I had a lovely lunch and the boys were very excited looking for presents for their Mum. They were so serious about it and thoughtful. Met loads of people there I knew, including three former colleagues from Ross High
After I came home, Arthur rang apologising for not coming along but he was getting his stuff ready for his gig. I told him not to worry as I see him all the time anyway. I said the same to them all, but Bobby had been to Innerleithen to see Pauline’s Mum so called with chocolates and a pretty little trinket box with more chocolates inside. (Yum Yum). When Margo came she brought me a lovely top decorated with butterflies in a butterfly bag and a set of Russian dolls, the same as other ones which were worn away as I’d had had them so long.
I’ll say it again, I feel really blessed with them all ,as John always said I would be.
