31st December 2007

HOGMANAY. Woke up about 7.am thinking about John and started feeling really sorry for myself, so decided to get up and do something. Read paper. Terribly sad news about baby killed by dog. How people can allow pets like that within a 100 miles of an infant, I’ll never know. Sad news too about young footballer’s death. I’m not a football fan, but can’t help feeling sorry about the loss of a young man in the prime of life.He has a young family too. Don’t know why I grumble.

After breakfast decided to do what we always did on Hogmanay - give the house a good clean (though I know it’s clean anyway! Margo said she would help when she came with Jonathan but when Chris came for lunch she helped me a bit. She then took me down street before we had lunch and a blether. Stuart came to borrow John’s car for the day. Also gave him his selection box. He forgot to take it on Christmas day.Did more cleaning in afternoon. Daft I know, but old habits die hard.

Bobby & Arthur both phoned. Bobby came to fix door. Margo and Jonathan arrived. Brought lovely flowers for tomorrow. She said shops are absolutely packed. You’d think there was going to be a
famine! Jonathan and I watched TV. Helped me to make up his bed, Got out drinks, cake, etc, ready for midnight (though I may fall asleep!)

"Love is in the Air'

30th December

Glad I was at church this morning as Robert made an announcement at end of the service. He is engaged! He then asked his fiance to come up beside him and it was Susan, who has lived in the Pans about two years now. Everyone is so happy for Robert and started clapping. She is a lovely person.I remember she comforted me when I was a bit upset on returning to church after John died. It's wonderful to be able to share in other people's happiness.

Rest of the day quite quiet.Helen came up with leftovers from yesterday. Don't know what I'm going to do with them all(Except for the strawberry meringues!)

At Home with the Hamiltons

Saturday, 29th December.

Bobby here in morning. Thank goodness took some of rubbish to skip, as I missed bin collection this week and it was overflowing! Sorted wires coming from hut which had fallen down and put new bulbs in wall lights. All the wee tasks John used to take care of.

Had happy afternoon at Helen's again. She had an "At Home" for Rory and Ian & Kirsten and Kenny as both weddings this year.Enjoyed meeting loads of people I hadn't seen for ages and food was provided by Ruth, school friend of Rory who has her own catering business. It was superb. Helen must be exhausted. with all the preparations, visitors,Christmas etc. Her house is super for entertaining, as people can spread out a bit. It has such character too and she has the knack of adding lots of interesting touches to it. Wee ones really enjoyed themselves . I thought they might have been bored, but they had great time. Came home with Arthur and Catherine.Margo & co. called in on way home. Made a cup of tea. Jonathan wants to come and stay with me on Hogmanay.

Happy Christmas

Friday, 28th December

Realise blog is out of sync. better get organised. Going to try to be more positive in New Year. Dare I say it, I’m feeling a bit better. Think doctor may have cracked my problem this time (fingers crossed). Really enjoyed Chris’s party. Very relaxed. All her friends “canny” just like Chris herself. Jim played accordion and I was fine. enjoyed the sing song.Had a talk with Sandra about choir. At nativity play on Sunday, sitting at side got a good view.Really enjoyed it, the bairns are always sweet. One of the angels slid off a bench and was rolling about. So funny. Going to try to sit in choir next week.

Arthur came on Christmas Eve. Talked about John a lot, but not in a sad way. Bobby came. Put handles on cupboards and Arthur helped. Fixed up new microwave. Showed them Christmas cards John and I exchanged over the years. Was going to put them out, but decided to keep them, as apart from the sentimental value, it’s interesting to see how style and wording have changed over the years. You never have "Happy Christmas Dear Sweetheart” on cards now or words like “gay”

Really enjoyed Christmas Day.Big boys here in morning.Dick and Joyce arrived, complete with Santa Claus hats! Dick looks a bit like Santa.Girls on phone.Talked to bairns. All very excited.

Helen came.We went to see Billy at the home before going down to hers. Must say I see a big improvement in the home since Auntie Nettie was there, He was having afternoon rest looking very comfortable spotlessly clean and perfectly dressed, just as he always was, wearing tie etc. Staff very attentive. Managed to get wee smiles from him. Helen wanted me to sing “Stille Nacht “ to him as Katharina used to, but couldn’t manage very much. So sad that she died so suddenly as she always took such care of him.

Great to see Rory and Ian again at Helen's.Brought me beautiful velvet and satin scarf and New Oxford Book of Literary Anecdotes.Great for dipping into. Lovely big red scarf from Helen and photograph albums.Kirsten gave me Christmas cake from "Betty’s" of Harrogate, which of course had “Betty’s” on the tin!

Christmas dinner in the gallery. Delicious meal. Had a good laugh later with Kirsten. She got keyboard from Helen and Al, but had forgotten how to play. I showed her the basics and we did some things together. She picked it up again fine as she has a good ear. Stephen,Catherine,Arthur came in later to take me home, so he was playing and singing “Hey Jude” etc.Got home in time to watch “Coronation Street”.I think the writers have been struggling with the plots recently,as some of the stories are a bit far fetched.

Boxing Day great though hectic, but again I was completely spoiled. Kay and family arrived first. All presents end up here, so great excitement. Even more excitement when Margo and gang came. Wrapping paper everywhere. I think Kay managed to retrieve some to recycle. Joyce’s son Alex phoned wanting to bring his wee niece aged two along and his mum. A bit overcome, the wee thing at first, but came round. Ailie enchanted with her. When Kay was going away we were all laughing at Robert going down the path wearing “see in the dark” goggles with torches on the side which Helen gave him. Margo and John had brought meal so John made it all, set table, cleared up etc.Margo and I did nothing. I think she married him, as he’s so like her dad. Had wee quiet weep now and again but all in all a really happy day.

Thursday just re-organised things, tidied up then lazed about. Phoned Jerry about Nan. Seems really worried about her Says it’s the main valve of the heart that’s causing the trouble. Don’t know whether to go to visit or not as she has to rest. So sad that they’ve no family, although very close to all of mine. There’s no-one like Auntie Nan and Uncle Jerry. Phoned back later and spoke to her. Says she would like a visit.Told her we wouldn't stay long. Must discuss with Kay.

Friday usual shopping and hairdresser. Arthur phoned. Playing in Labour club tonight, then Goth tomorrow. At pool today. Wants to take me with him one day. Suppose it would help aches and pains. Margo phoned. Ailie trying on clothes she got for presents. She’s growing up!

On reading this over, it’s all so mundane and I seem so inward looking. I’m still interested in the wider scheme of things however. Shocked about news of Benazir Bhutto and what that tragedy will lead to in that troubled country.

Must do a blog about other news, books I’ve read recently and television programmes I’ve watched.Read this again this morning, had to do spelling and punctuation corrections.Tut tut!

Christmas preparations

Thursday 20th December,

Still catching up. Feel slightly better. Tuesday, Karen next door came to ask if I needed anything at shops. She’s a really good neighbour. Margo came down with bairns straight from school. Brought rolls etc for tea. Bairns looked lovely with school uniforms on. Great help in wrapping up parcels.Helen brought paper, labels etc. She put up Christmas cards. I’m so lucky with family. Kitchen finished at last. Margaret coming tomorrow to help clear up.

Wednesday, 19th December.

Saw doctor. change of medication and to have blood tests etc. Helen took me, then went to Blooms to order holly wreaths. Went to Shona’s wee shop. it’s lovely. bought one ore two things. Kitchen all spic and span and most of dishes back in cupboards thanks to Margaret. Rita here in afternoon. Dick and Joyce came. Back from Bruges. Brought Belgian chocolates.

Thursday, 20th December.

Kay here. Took me last of my food shopping and wine, chocs etc. Wrapped last of presents for me. She’s so organised, it’s great! I’m sure she’ll do well in her new job. Fiona asked me to Harlaw Hill tomorrow afternoon,as Music in Hospitals coming, Very kind, but don’t think I’ll manage. Better have quiet day as Chris’s 70th birthday in evening.

Update

18th December

Trying to catch up. Forgot to mention Jonathan’s choir concert. Wonderful, all those young voices, singing beautifully and looking so happy. Did lots of fun things as well as the classics Jonathan started when he was seven, now he’s fourteen, his voice is deepening so he’s been moved up accordingly. All credit to their teachers!
Kay’s choir at St. Mary’s Haddington was similarily inspiring with lots of audience participation.

Didn’t go to Whitecraig.Thought better rest as going out next day. Still not feeling great Sure it’s very strong medication making me feel bad. Can’t let Ailie dpwn and enjoyed her coffee morning. Very Impressed with school (brand new building) and pupils, They had made lots of things, so Helen & I bought something from every stall. Ailie on bakery stall, singing in choir and playing recorder. There were Highland dancers and a boy was having a sponsored haircut. Margo showed me her wee office and I met some of the staff. She took her wee choir to sing in the foyer of the Festival Theatre on Wednesday afternoon as the people were going in. It was an afternoon for volunteers.

Managed to Preston Lodge in afternoon. Another great concert, though a bit different. More modern. Girls very mature! Some great instrumentalists, especially in the brass and guitar sections. Two second year boys sang “I’m a believer” and they were terrific! Reminded me of Bobby and Arthur singing “Lady Rose”. Arthur was twelve and Bobby fourteen. Girls choir did new version of “In the Bleak Midwinter” -lovely. Lots of cheery modern songs as well as the traditional ones. We were served delicious tea, given free raffle. Good to see good community relations still carrying on at PL.

Too much for me all this gadding about. Pretty useless on Friday, and tiler here for kitchen. Alex Scott took me shopping as Dick and Joyce at Bruges, then took me to his house for lunch with Rita. Rested in afternoon as choir at night.Seriously considering giving up the choir, as I don’t seem to have the strength to sing some of the anthems etc. Arthur thinks I shouldn’t decide too hastily as I may begin to feel better, but I feel if I can’t give of my best I’d rather not do it at all as I’d be letting everyone down. As I said to him I’ve been in it nearly sixty years! I would miss singing though, but “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” John used to tease me when I was going to choir practice. "You should be able to sing by now, all the practising you've done." he'd say. How I miss him, his love, his common sense, his strength.

Busy Week

Tuesday 14th December

Spoke too soon about feeling better as a bit fluey later on yesterday and all day today. Hope i’ll be better tomorrow as some busy days ahead. Tomorrow night going to Whitecraig Church Guild Christmas party with choir. We’re not singing, but it’s usually a good night, with a lovely meal and music. Gave it a miss last year and still not sure about going as it’s the kind of music John and I liked, but I’ll see.

Anyway, Thursday will be busy as Ailie’s class is having a coffee morning at her school and she’s desperate for me to come, so Helen is taking me.Was asked to Preston Lodge History dept as well to discuss memories of WW2 with S3, but had to decline. Sent up folder of material I used when I did it at St Gabriel’s last year and got a nice letter back. Going to concert for Senior citizens at P L in afternoon (if I’m back in time) It’s usually very good. The teacher who organised it used to work with me at Ross High, so ropes me in to get in touch with as many “oldies” as possible to tell them to come along.Port Seton and Longniddry residents come too.

Today, I tried to finish off cards etc. Gardener came to cut back trees, shrubs etc. Put bulbs in tubs for me. Bobby and Pauline away to Innerleithen today. Her Mum is having serious op.tomorrow. Hopefully everything will be fine.

Christmas socials

Monday 10th December

Don’t know where to begin. There’s so much I could have put in a daily blog since last time, so I’ll just have to mention whatever springs to mind. Things becoming quite hectic, now of course, as it is for everyone, but I’m glad to say I’m a bit better, healthwise. Sunday 2nd a pleasant visit from “the Aunties” (Margo’s four sisters - in - law) They were so kind and helpful, I hardly had to do a thing and of course they were laden with gifts! They asked if I needed any shopping done in town and Mary going to get berets (recommended in Scotsman) for two young friends from Accessorize and Marion, vouchers for Helen from Ragamuffin. Bought Helen something from Good Gifts as well.

Last Monday was a Fenton Barns with Chris and Ella. We had lunch at the country store there and enjoyed potato and oatmeal soup which was a full meal in itself!Looked at kitchen chairs at East Linton countrry furniture, but the prices are extortionate, so It’s bacj to Ikea. Tuesday evening at History Society Christmas social, which was very pleasant and relaxing, enjoying excellent buffet, listening to music and joining in with the Christmas carols.Tuesday, Ray came.Still worried about Anna’s wedding. Desperate for me to come to church service in East Saltoun to augment the singing. Kay arrived, so going to take me and she’ll help too. Wednesday, Helen and I went to pick tiles for kitchen and handles for units. Just got back, whrn firm phoned. Worktops to be fitted on 14th. Tiler coming on 17th. I’ll be glad when it’s all finished! Caught up with cards and presents on Thursday. Thank goodness I got most of stuff online.Friday, usual shopping and hair. Quite flustered in Post Office, with parcels, calendars etc to post. John used to attend to these things for me. Dick’s for lunch and Rural party in evening with Chris. Enjoyed it very much, until the entertainers sang “Dunbarton’s Drums, which John and I used to do.

“Dunbarton’s Drums they sound so bonnie
For they remind me o’ my Johnnie....’

Have to stop now

Cannonballs

29th November, 2007

“Oh, what a beautiful morning” to quote the song. It’s just such a change from the dreary weather we’ve had all week.It made me feel more cheerful, but my back pain is just wearing me down. No matter what I am doing it is getting relentless, so it’s the doctor again tomorrow I’m afraid (If I can get an appointment.) I’ve so much to do, so hope I get a bit more help. Glad I managed to do most of shopping online earlier in the week.

Managed to Nan and Jerry’s on Tuesday with Kay. She comes in after being at the Pennypit helping at the Adult Basic Education unit. Everyone is telling her she could get a full time job as both boys are at school, but I think she feels this will give her confidence to get back into the workplace. She may decide to do a short teacher training course at Moray House later. Nan and Jerry had gone to such trouble to make us a lovely lunch, with a beautifully set table etc.

At night Jean and I went to the History Society. Very few members there, but we had one of the most interesting speakers we had ever had and she was local. Marie Connachan/Baillie had brought along a cannonball which her husband discovered in the back garden. It was surprisingly small, but very heavy. She’d found out it had been fired at the battle of Prestonpans from the sea or been brought up on a cart from Dunbar by Cope’s army! Seemingly,it was capable of going through three men and a horse. Horrible! This information was given to her husband when he went to Edinburgh castle to enquire about weapons of war. It was also commom practice to go round after a battle to retrieve the cannonballs as they were very expensive! She’s going to send me the website to get more information. She also brought an old cream jug which also had quite a history. Marie is quite an interesting character, with a good sense of humour, so it was an enjoyable meeting.

Margaret came yesterday and helped put up my heavy curtains, so the living room looks quite cosy. Jonathan coming at weekend. Says he’ll help to put up my little tree etc. Rita came in afternoon, then Lilian. She’s been away at Benidorm. She goes there all the time. Not my cup of tea I’m afraid, but at least it’s sunny! Looking after Vincent as Sandra away to London for a few days. Left me another Janet Evanovich book.

Al's Christmas exhibition starting this weekend.

Douglas's Birthday

Monday 26th November

Quite concerned about Rita last week. Phoned about a knitting question from Catherine and Alex said she was in the Royal Infirmary. She wasn’t feeling well on Tuesday morning and fell in the kitchen, banging her head pretty badly. Woke up in ambulance on way to the Royal. They kept her in and did various tests so she’s back home, but still pretty groggy. Good job Alex and Alan were there when she fell. She didn’t manage to the afternoon tea in the church hall on Thursday but Alex brought her to the Christmas Fayre in the Town Hall on Saturday for a wee while. Bought some stuff from bric-a - brac stall for Douglas to put in with his birthday present and hand knitted Aran jumper for Robert, Lots of home baking too of course and marmalade. Tried to resist tablet, but in vain. Dick asked me to keep Joyce company while he was out in the afternoon, but I felt terrible after walking along as it was so windy and my back was aching. Luckily saw Stuart when I was coming out the gate Gave me a lift and locked up etc.

Yesterday Gavin came to take me to East Linton for Douglas’s birthday. Couldn’t believe I’d left his present bag at home! Bobby arrived the same time as Gavin and I’d so many other bags with goodies etc that I hadn’t picked it up! However he got it when his dad brought me home. Phoned me today to thank me and he seemed most delighted with a sports timer and a magnetic snakes and ladders that I bought for 10p each at the Christmas Fayre! He got Snakehead by Anthony Horowitz from Kay and Gavin. It seems a huge book for a ten year old, although he reads very quickly Afraid Robert was in trouble as he had said the F word in the kitchen in front of his dad, so got a big lecture! Wee soul was very subdued afterwards, but soon bounced back. Enjoyed being with them, but missed John.

Was just home when man came about my new tiles for kitchen. Will be glad when it’s finished.

Books

Tuesday, 20th November.

Pretty miserable weather or gey dreich the day. Must really try to keep up to date with my blogging, as Christmas is approaching fast and there will be so much going on. I’ve decided to do most of my shopping online and I’ve got most of the family’s presents already. Books arrived today from booksfromscotland.com which include “Maw Broon’s Cookbook” and “Doh ray me, when a was wee” I believe Maw Broon’s is ahead of Nigella Lawson’s in the cookery book stakes! Some of the old recipes of course are considered unhealthy nowadays.but it’s a very entertaining read with old adverts, comments etc. The other one is a compilation of childhood rhymes and songs from all over Scotland, which is also very good. Many of them are still well known round about here, but there are others I don’t know including this one which is sung to a well known tune

BETTY BETTY

Betty Betty show us your leg
Show us your leg show us your leg
Betty Betty show us your leg
An inch above the knee

(I’m sure John would have liked singing that one to me!)

Talking of legs Ailie was asking her Mum about the Commonwealth games and saying she would like to start training in a sport. Margo is going along with it and to encourage her told her that I was a school champion at running (I kid you not) and of course she ( and her brothers) laughed in disbelief. When they were here on Sunday they asked if it was really true, so we hunted through all my memory boxes (of which there are many) but couldn’t find the certificate I won. It will be somewhere, as I’m a compulsive hoarder. I did have a shot at dancing along with a DVD they had brought with all the moves, but I didn’t last 2 minutes! Kay says Douglas is keen to start training too! It’s lovely for them to have dreams.

Enjoyed “Cranford” on Sunday night but not sure if Mrs Gaskell would approve.Must read the book again (if I can find it) and compare.

The results of the Lterary Quiz were in the Times on Sunday and we had three wrong, two of which were modern versions of stories from ancient texts. One was from Ian McEwan’s “A Child in Time” and another from Christopher Fry’s “ A Phoenix Too Frequent.”.We’ll have to change our ideas a bit and not rely too much on the classics, but it was good fun doing it anyway. Finished reading “Fire in the Blood” but I wasn’t impressed. Not nearly as good as “Suite Francaise” . I see a film has been made of “The Jane Austen Book Club”. Wasn’t very great either.Liked “To the Nines” by Janet Evanovich-very funny. Reading “The Piano Tuner” at the moment. Got these from Sandra. She was away for a couple of days, so asked me to look in on her new kitten. He’s a delight-so tiny, and so mischievous.

Kay here today and lifted down my Christmas card box as I want to take stock to see what I need.I have lots left from last year. Also brought me some shopping and helped organise the stuff from the kitchen cupboards. I’m really pleased with the doors on the units. They were so shabby before, but they look like new now. Chris came in from invigilating and she too was impressed. I gave her the painter’s phone number, as she’s thinking of having hers done.Choosing worktops and tiles now. It will be nice when it's all finished but I find coping with decorating etc a bit much now. I told Kay if I mention having anything else done to remind me of the muddle I've been in. Bobby came in on way home to put out recycling boxes. Loads of papers as I forgot about them last week. We had a good blether and a laugh.

Windy Weather

Thursday 8th November

Back still not much better. Resting a lot, but feel I must try to go out a bit. Managed to go to the Brunton on Tuesday night as Jean and I had tickets for “Atonement”. Arthur took us up and we met Phemie an Bill who brought us home, so that saved Arthur coming back. Enjoyed it, but we always feel the quality of sound in the Brunton is not very good when a film is being shown. I suppose it wasn’t really intended to be used as a cinema. It’s OK when it’s a play or musical programme.

I was sorry I missed the School sale in the Labour Club as I might have managed to get some shopping done plus supporting the school at the same time.Hope it went well.

Really strong wind today. The garden is quite sheltered and perhaps why there were lots of birds about, starlings mainly but also sparrows and a few blackbirds too and of course my solitary robin. Last year there were two in the garden, which is very unusual as they’re extremely territorial.

Thought I’d try a walk this afternoon as Kay met Ian Wilson in Haddington at the weekend and he told her Catherine goes to the Disability Resource Centre in Prestonpans Community Centre every Thursday, so I could go and see her there. I’m glad I did, but at the same time it was so sad to see how her illness has taken its toll since she was over for New Year 2005. It’s hard to believe she is the same age as Arthur.Gave her photo of John with our four and she was so pleased with it. She kept looking at it and trying to say their names. I was saying to Jean when she phoned later on, I know people are always complaining about the Health service, the government etc, but isn’t it wonderful how people like Catherine are taken care of and have places like the resource centre to go to. The same goes for Harlaw Hill Day Centre. Must go round there some time.

Called into Nettie’s afterwards and had a cup of tea and one of her home made scones. She’d just made marmalade, so she gave me three jars (Yum,Yum) also some Geographic magazines and posters for the bairns. Our Catherine gave me a lift home and also met Pauline on way home from school. She is worried about her mum, who isn’t very well.Bobby going to get me ink for my computer, as lots of people have been asking me for cards with John’s paintings for Christmas. Helen is coming up to guillotine them for me tomorrow.

I know my blogs are far too long.

Family weekend

Monday 5th November.

Feel as if I’ve had a “Lost Weekend” as my old back pain still bad. Couldn’t do much and worried about the work being done in the kitchen. Felt drugged up to the eyeballs with pain killers.Family been great of course. Stuart here on Saturday and emptied out the units and the girls here on Sunday. Kay got things things organised, Margo made tea, prepared my evening meal and took the flowers to her Dad. Catherine and Kay had a good blether about jobs in schools etc. and Arthur chatted to me and the bairns. We watched old videos of them when they were wee. They love that.I had mixed feelings watching them as seeing John in them made me love him all the more and miss him all the more at the same time.(if that makes sense).

Great excitement when we heard the wild geese calling. Rushed to the door and there they were, flying in formation against a pink sky. Isn’t Nature wonderful!

'And far abune the Angus straths I saw the wild geese flee,
A lang, lang skein o' beatin' wings wi' their heids towards the sea,
And aye their cryin' voices trailed ahint them on the air—'
'O Wind, hae maircy, haud yer whisht, for I daurna listen mair!'

abune = above
straths = valleys, glens
haud yer whisht = keep quiet!
daurna listen mair = dare not listen more

At night I just stretched out and watched telly. Especially liked “Room with a View”. I’ve seen it before (The Merchant Ivory production” ) but the old romantic in me couldn’t resist it. I just love E.M. Forster’s novels and have read them over and over again. He is so good at these social comedies which expose the class ridden. sexually repressed society of the Edwardians.

On Saturday “Scotland’s Music” introduced by Phil Cunningham was excellent and what made it specially interesting was that it started off in the Pans! There he was standing at the Tower, with a group singing “Johnnie Cope”. Not just the music , but the scenery too made this a great programme.John would have loved it. I like Barbara Dickson singing. Much better than Eddie Reader. I noticed Annemarie Allan mentioned in the credits.

Guy Fawkes day today. Met Margaret Hutt last week. She reminded me how all her family used to come to us on 5th November, when we had a mini bonfire, I made stovies and John made toffee apples. Happy days!

Been at doctor this morning. Pain patches increased, so here’s hoping that does the trick.

Poem of the month

Thursday, 1st November.

The poet must have been feeling pretty negative, when he wrote the following poem.
November by Thomas Hood
(1789-1845)
No sun--no moon!
No morn--no noon!
No dawn--no dusk--no proper time of day--
No sky--no earthly view--
No distance looking blue--
No road--no street--
No "t'other side the way"--
No end to any Row--
No indications where the Crescents go--
No top to any steeple--
No recognitions of familiar people--
No courtesies for showing 'em-- No knowing 'em!
No mail--no post--
No news from any foreign coast--
No park--no ring--no afternoon gentility--
No company--no nobility--
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member--
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds,

November!

If today is anything to go by, November doesn’t seem too bad weatherwise. as it’s been lovely most of the day and I’ve been feeling not too bad emotionally, though my back is still pretty troublesome.Still a few leaves on the trees and lots of berries for the birds. Gardener was here, so of course a blackbird and a robin were hopping hopefully around after him. All is now nice and tidy and he planted my winter pansies where I can see them when I am at the sink. I always think pansies have wee faces and I especially like the blue and yellow ones. Had a look at the hyacinth bulbs from last year’s pots which are in the hut. Sat there a wee while feeling close to John Helen arrived. Talked about having doors on kitchen units painted, as they’re a bit shabby.

Went to Sandra’s later to see the kitten. He is just lovely and such a wee cutey. Climbed into a basket, then peeked over the top, scurried about the book case, then tried to climb up a plant. He ended up falling asleep on Sandra's shoulder. Must take the bairns to see him when they come down.

Stephen came in on way home from work. It was lovely to see him. Good blether, then the doorbell rang and it was Arthur. He looks more like Stephen’s brother than his dad. They are going to see Ray Lamontagne in the Playhouse tomorrow. I’ve heard the name, but don’t know much about him. A bit like Bob Dylan, Otis Redding Arthur said.

Not much on telly tonight, so did a little ironing and managed to finish my little hat. Have to wait to measure Robert’s head before I can complete balaclava.

Enjoying reading "To the Nines" by Janet Evanovich - one of the books Sandra gave me. It's very funny.

Hallowe'en

Tuesday 31st October.

Hallowe’en will always remind me of my dad, because it was his birthday and Mum always made a “clootie” dumpling with silver threepenny bits in it. She also made a huge scone, which was hung from the pulley in the kitchen and smothered in treacle, while we tried to take a bite from it with our hands behind our backs! My brothers used to push the treacly scone into my hair. All part of the fun! All that and dropping a fork into a basin to catch one of the bobbing apples is one of my most vivid childhood memories.

I didn’t know then of course (and I don’t think my parents knew either) that the bobbing apples were supposed to represent the poor souls being ducked to make them confess to being witches. It was a catch 22 situation for if they survived that was proof that they were witches, so they were burned anyway. I suppose many of our traditions are derived from other barbaric practices in our history

Didn’t get any guisers except Karen next door with Yvonne, dressed as a mummy! She had made the outfit out of an old downie and it was very effective. I screamed convincingly when she came to the door!

Still sorting things out in John’s room, deciding what to keep etc. Some old videos which I must get copied to dvds. Couple of John playing and me singing about 15 years ago, but I couldn’t watch them at the moment.

After all that bending etc. my back was pretty weak and sore. I think too it was because I was trailing a bit yesterday having to go to the ENT at Lauriston . What a waste of time too, as I thoughtt it was to get my new hearing aid, but it was just to clean and repair my current one. I won’t get the new one till after Christmas. Wish I had got the same op on my left ear that I got on my right thirty six years ago. It was a great success.

Yesterday too I was so pleased when Kay came in to tell me how she got on working as a volunteer tutor at the Adult Basic Learning course at the Pennypit. She enjoyed it very much and met some interesting people. I'm glad she's getting into the swing of things again. Brought me some shopping and lifted the boxes out of the cupboard to make it easier for me to go through them.

Grandpa's magic tricks

Monday 29th October

It was great fun at Kay’s yesterday watching the bairns all playing together. Robert actually had his party on Friday for his little school friends, but this was a little grown up party with Nan and Jerry and Kay’s friend Jenny and husband Nick with Eve (nine)and Millie three, so that made seven wee ones altogether(counting Jonathan who is fourteen). Ailie loved looking after little Millie and there was lots of laughter and great excitement when Robert blew out the six candles on his birthday cake! Didn’t know that birthday candles doubled as sparklers nowadays. Kay had made a trifle and they were teasing me about the one I made at New Year when I put the jelly and custard in the wrong way round!

One of Robert's presents was a magic set, so he was trying to do some of the tricks. Then, of course they all wanted to do the ones like Grandpa used to do. Jonathan was trying the one about rubbing the balloon on his head, then sticking it to the ceiling, but he couldn’t quite manage it. Funny, coming home in the car he said he kept wondering where John was and thinking he would come into the room at any moment. I was thinking that he WAS there actually, because I can see him in every one of them
and it gives me a warm feeling knowing that they remember all his magic tricks and how he was able to make toys and repair anything for them that was broken. Arthur came later. Had cup of tea. Talked about car etc. In the morning when he was here we had a good blether about songs.

Ray couldn’t manage today. Going to phone to arrange another day. Chris here for lunch.Glad I have lots of soup in the freezer, as it’s so handy - and tasty. Going to try carrot and coriander this week instead of my usual broth or lentil.

Helen came in. Showed us a lovely jacket she got on ebay. She seems to have a knack for getting bargains, but I think I’m too wary about taking a chance. I read in one of the letters in my “Oldie’ magazine that women in my age group should be more adventurous in their dress and wear plunging tops (to show off the wrinkles?), slinky black trousers, sleek silver trainers, long earrings, floaty scarves etc. Can’t picture myself somehow!

Walked along to see how Joyce and Dick got on at the Radisson. They enjoyed it and saw lots of folks they knew. It’s lovely to see Dillon curled up before the fire again. Lucy followed me along and was waiting at the gate to follow me home. She gets more human every day!

Visiting and Visitors

Saturday, 27th October.

Seemed very dark when I woke this morning. Felt a bit cold, so switched on heating, filled hot water bottle and snuggled back down with a cup of tea and the Scotsman! Margo phoned. Going to “Blood Brothers” this afternoon. Arthur phoned later to say he was coming to take out the car battery to recharge it. He ran me round to Rita’s She showed me little coat set she’d knitted, complete with tiny boots and gloves -exquisite! I’m still plodding on with Robert’s balaclava!

Alex came in, asked if we wanted cup of tea or coffee. Suggested “Camp” coffee. Didn’t know it was still available! Reminds me of Granny’s when I was small and Auntie Nettie giving me a cup and a Rich Tea biscuit to dunk. Made me feel quite grown up. Always thought it was quite exotic, especially with the Indian gentleman on the label. Noticed a difference on the label now, as the Indian is no longer the servant, but is sitting enjoying a cup with the British soldier.

Alex ran me home and I was just in when Sandra arrived. with some books, she thought I might like to borrow. That’s great, as I’ve just finished “Two Caravans “ and I didn’t have much time to choose anything at the library yesterday. Just having a cup of tea, when Karen next door came over, with her wee girl Yvonne. She’s in first year at Preston Lodge and brought me a piece of lemon sponge cake she had made in Home Economics. Very sweet of her. Had a wee blether, as Karen knew Sandra from Ross High days.

Kay phoned about us coming down tomorrow. Robert is very excited.

East Lothian Life

Friday, 26th October.

Feel a lot better today. Sandra popped in to tell me that her kitten has arrived. It’s four weeks old and as it’s ginger, she’s going to call it Vincent. Told her about last Sunday’s concert in church. It was great to hear such a wonderful selection of music, ranging from Peter Antonelli playing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata to a Beatles selection by Polwarth Brass.

Dick took me the library before shopping etc.Wanted to buy two copies of “Hox” but there were none left from last night’s launch.I’m really pleased it was a success. I’d hoped to take one to Douglas on Sunday when I go down for Robert’s birthday but Erica said that Annemarie might be in with some later and she’ll let me know. Ordered a couple of books for myself when I was in.

Hairdresser and a little shopping. Sharon showed me lovely dress she’s going to wear to a dinner tonight.Janice Scott gave me a lift home. Dick is in a hurry as he and Joyce are going to the Radisson hotel for a conference on “Huntington’s Chorea”, which is what Joyce suffers from.

Managed to put some more of his stuff back in John’s room. He had kept every copy of East Lothian Life since its start as he was one its early contributors. Had a look and decided to hang on to them. Read the ones with his articles through a blur of tears, but I’m managing to type this all right. Margo and Kay both phoned. Margo is coming on Sunday, so taking me to Kay’s. Hope we can all get in the car! It will be great to see all the bairns together.

Don’t think I’ll manage the choir. Still a bit sore after yesterday.

Hospital, shopping

Thursday 25th October.

Haven’t really caught up with my blog this week, as I’ve not been feeling well at all. My old problem, plus some new ones. After seeing consultant at hospital today, however and receiving some treatment I feel a bit better. Being out a bit helped too, even though I just sat in Helen’s car and she did some shopping for me. It means I won’t have much to do tomorrow. She is a real blessing to me and keeps me cheery into the bargain.

Found it quite interesting watching people going out and in shops at the Fort. Some were struggling with big items from Argos, which made me think about the materialistic age we live in. Do we really need all the gadgets which are around nowadays? Saying that, I’m a bit of a hypocrite as I don’t think I’d like to go back to using a washboard and wringer as I did fifty years ago!

Would have loved a browse round Borders, but was just desperate to get home and have a rest.

Cheerful visitors

Friday !9th October

Another gorgeous day. Helen came in. Going to optician to have Billy’s glasses repaired She found them in a drawer in his room, yet the staff at the home said they couldn’t find them. Each pair had a lens missing, so I was going to optician anyway with mine. Phoned Dick to say I wouldn’t be needing a lift..Kay phoned to say they were coming to make my tea at night..

Sandra popped in. Just back from Madrid with the Kevock choir. She told us about the great time she had with lots of laughs. Later enjoyed hearing about Sharon’s weekend in London at a haidresser’s show and also about her shopping.

Filled up some shelves in John’s room again, but kept finding wee notes. Seeing his handwriting like that just chokes me up.

Wonderful when bairns arrived though, giving me big hugs and chattering away. Gavin had brought toolbox to put up new valance rail in living room, so they went ahead with that and Kay hooked them up. I said it could have waited till I put the heavy curtains up for Christmas, but I must say the living room looks much better now. Helped Robert with a spelling game on toy computer Margo had left for him. He also got two Spiderman outfits. Douglas got a caddy full of golf clubs which were too small for Keir. He was so proud wheeling it up and down. Kay and I looked at the paperwork I had asked her about, so that’s all under control now.

Delicious lasagne and crusty bread for tea. Gavin laughed when I showed him photos of Rory and Ian’s wedding cake.He too loves Tunnock’s teacakes.

Another busy happy day.

What a Wonderful world

Thursday, 18th October.

When I switched on the radio first thing Louis Armstrong was singing "What a Wonderful World” and it certainly seemed like it when I opened the curtains.

“I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.”

A bonus too when the robin was sitting near the door waiting for breakfast, with the pair of blackbirds pecking away nearby. Leisurely breakfast, then started preparing to put cds on top shelf of bookcase in bedroom. Gave shelves a wee sponge first. Rae phoned, She’s feeling much better and asked me to ask Arthur if the band is available for the wedding, as Anna wants a party in the village hall in the evening for all the cousins and friends. I’ll phone him tonight.

Bobby came in.On holiday this week.He was going to Aldi’s and asked if I needed anything. Was going there as there was an offer on for jogging gear, as he’s going to start a new health regime after being at doctor yesterday.
I needed milk so that was fine.

Thought I would iron curtains and downie cover but “The best laid schemes etc”- The iron wasn’t working. Phoned Bobby, so he brought up spare and took mine away for repair, but by that time Jean was coming round, so had to put ironing on hold. Margo phoned to say they’re coming down at tea tme and bringing the meal with them. Said she’ll do ironing when she arrives. Gardener came next and did a good tidy up. We’re amazed the grass is still growing and still quite lush Found lots of bulbs in hut, but the geraniums in the pots are still a blaze of colour so going to leave them till later.

Jean and I had good blether. Maybe going to play in the Goth about witches. Brunton Theatre next week to see film “Becoming Jane.” discussed local news, politics, books etc. and she was so pleased to see the bairns when Margo arrived. She couldn’t believe how tall Jonathan was! Going to give him more Agatha Christie books.I see “On Chesil Beach” didn’t win the Booker

I’m very impressed by Annemarie Allan winning the Kelpie prize. What an honour for her and Prestonpans. Must get a copy for the bairns.

John made tea, Margo hung curtains. Jonathan helped me make up bed. I showed them an old video taken when Jonathan was five and Ailie two and we were all in stitches laughing, but Margo and I were a bit weepy when John was in it.Arthur came along. It was great to see him. He had great time.and looked really well. Told him about Rae so he’s going to check it out.

I feel really blessed today.

Dillon's return

Wednesday, 17th October.

Phone call early from Rae-checking ok for a visit. Arrived about 9.30. She looked absolutely terrible.I’ve been worried about her for a while. I’m sure there’s more wrong than the light allergy she suffers from. She can’t sit in the conservatory because of the sunlight and was going to sit up the back garden for a cigarette, but I told her it was far too cold and to smoke in the house if she wanted. She looks so thin and weak. When I made oatcakes and cheese for us later on she couldn’t cut the cheese, yet is much younger than me. She’s always been a strong person too.

Told me her daughter, Anna is getting married on 17th December and she doesn’t feel up to planning a wedding. Took some photos of Kirsten away with her to get ideas about dress. I also gave her note of good caterers. I wish Anna would just arrange everything herself as Rae is really not able.

We had a bit of a laugh though, discussing some of the lecturers and tutors at university when we were there. One sang a madrigal in the lecture hall once and another appeared in a toga when we did Julius Caesar! How we wished we'd had more time to enjoy the courses, especially English language. If we weren't so old and unfit we'd like to study again at our leisure, before our brains seize up as well as everything else!

Joyce phoned to tell me Dillon is back! Dick explained that he had a phone call from the emergency vet at the Braids in Edinburgh, telling him he was there. Someone ( must have been an animal lover!) had found him in Prestonpans and taken him in. The local vet had passed Dick’s “missing” message so they were able to make contact. When he collected him he’d to pay £500! He has some injuries, so they’re keeping him indoors at the moment so there’s a happy ending! Helen arrived. She’d been along to see him.Gave me some official photos of Rory's wedding.

Sons and grandsons

Tuesday, 16th October.

Much better this morning. Slept all night, I was so cosy, though still a bit groggy when I stood up. Karen next door came in to ask if it’s OK to finish laying the chips beside the fence. I told her it was fine by me. she is very kind, asking if there was anything I needed done.

Carpet here at last and I’m very pleased with it. Lovely meal from Stephen, Couldn’t eat it all. going to have sticky toffee pudding tomorrow (wicked!) He washed up, put in new light bulb in kitchen and put out brown bin. Craig and Bobby moved furniture, put up curtain rail, hung mirror etc.I’m lucky to have these big strong men looking after me John would have been very proud of them. Joanne came too and enjoyed looking at Rory and Kirsten’s photos then made a cup of tea.

Bad day

Monday. 15th October.

Felt very shivery in bed during the night. Woke up rather fluey.Wonder if it was result of the flu jag I got last Thursday. Had to cancel appointment at ENT but got another for 30th. Stayed in bed till late. After getting dressed, felt a bit wonky so lay lay on bed again. Helen phoned, then came up with soup and stayed a wee while. Slept most of afternoon, put electric heat pad on. Felt a bit better later, but did nothing for rest of day. Margo phoned, but told her I was OK. Stephen phoned to say he’s coming in to make my meal for me on way home from work tomorrow. Put big winter quilt on bed. Miss cuddles from John to heat me up.

Harvest Festival

Sunday, 14th October

Harvest Festival. Lots of people brought boxes, so the front of the chuch was very colourful. Robert away on holiday.Mr Black from Longniddry was preaching. A traditional minister, so we sang all the well known harvest hymns, which we enjoyed, though we enjoy singing the more modern ones too.Lift from Janice Hooker. Telling me all about her holiday in Barcelona with her dad and showed me her photos. Came in for a cup of tea and to look at Rory’s photos. Margo came later Stephen brought some soup for me. Think he’s taking his dad’s place, while he’s on holiday. Margo helped me to move coats and stuff back. We wern’t so weepy this time.

Paintings

Saturday. 13th October

Weather not so nice. Phoned Rita. We had been going to Joyce’s, but she is just coming here as Dick phoned to see Laura and Alex are coming to take them out for a meal. Still no sign of Dillon.

Rita brought her latest painting. A different style. It’s something like the Hornel I have in the sitting room with the girls merging into the landscape. I had a similar one by McTaggart before, which I really liked better. The one I had was of poor bairns by the side of a burn. In contrast I had two Victorian type paintings on either side of the Mactaggart.I know I’m very sentimental.

Surprise visit by Kay and the boys. It was great to see them. Robert raiding the cupboards for goodies of course. Although I’d bought loads of fruit, they prefer the chocolate biccies when they're here.Douglas made our cup of tea. I was worried about him handling the kettle, but Kay said he would be fine and so he was as he was very careful. Rita remarked on his nice manners.

Missing cat

Friday 12th October,

Another beautiful day. The grass is carpeted with leaves. I must take a photograph before they’re all blown away, though some of the trees are stiil holding on to them. In Musselburgh yesterday the cherry trees at Loretto corner are just lovely as is the red ivy on one of the houses nearer the Town Hall. Still not many bird around, just the pair of blackbirds and a robin. Here’s hoping they come back when the weather gets colder. Not much shopping, as did it yesterday but at hairdresser’s. Dick gave me a lift. Went to see Joyce . She’s very upset, as their cat, Dillon, has disappeared. They haven’t seen him for a week. Dick has put up notices all round about and Helen made up a wee letter with his picture and went round doors with it. Hope it comes back soon.

Phone call to say carpet is being fitted tomorrow, so Margaret came today instead of Wednesday to help me clean up the room after the decorator.

Call from my friend Mary from Haddington coming to see me with my other friend Cathie Next week I’ll be busy with the school being on holiday. Arthur and Catherine off to Spain. I’ll miss him.

Choir tonight - practising for harvest.Haven’t done a shoebox this year, but giving a donation towards postage etc. John used to take great pride in decorating the box beautifully for me. Phoned Sandra. She is off to Madrid tomorrow with the Kevock choir.

Elsa and Oliver

Thursday,11th October.

Elsa from University days phoned yesterday. In Musselburgh for the day to babysit her grandson, Oliver, who is two and a half, so came down to see me. His mum is Spanish and teaches at Loretto two days a week. The wee soul was a delight. A gentle bairn with beautiful smile and huge brown eyes. He was fascinated by the butterflies on the fence and various wee animal ornaments in the garden, plus the fire engine and teddy bear in the house. Elsa went back to teaching one day a week at Armadale academy after her husband died two years ago.

I had stupidly told her to get the 26 bus, but realised when I was standing at the bus stop waiting that she might have taken the 26 to Port Seton instead of Tranent. Sure enough that’s what she did, got off the bus at Robertson Avenue, was directed up Coffin Lane and finally asked two women who said “Oh aye, that’s Betty McArthur, the singer, she jist steys roond there”. As she said when she arrived, “Well, if I didn’t know Prestonpans before, I know it now.”

We had a good laugh and she was saying she’s off shortly to China, which includes a visit to see the Emperor’s warriors in situ! She is also in a book group and they go every year to the Wigtown book festival, so she told me all about all the writers who were there.

Laughed how she used to come down when our families were young to go to the games which were held at Polwarh Park and they all stayed overnight, so we used to have a great time! The bairns all slept on the floor, so there was some carry-on! Her husband was a bit of an athlete, so he really enjoyed watching the runners. When she retired, they took up hill walking.

Today, I went to the doctor, as, apart from my aches and pains, I feel so sleepy all the time. He said it might be my medication, as the strength had been increased to help me cope last year, but now that I have patches for pain it may be too much. I’ve to reduce them gradually and phone him next week to see how I’m doing. Gave me flu jag. Bought a book “A Moment in Time” by H.E.Bates in surgery.Helen had given me a lift, then we went shopping for groceries and had our lunch out. Had a sleep in afternoon, caught up on my post.Margo phoned, so had a good chat.I always look forward to her phoning. Not much on TV tonight I’m afraid.

Friends and family

Tuesday, 9th October

Change in the weather this morning. Pretty miserable. I felt the same at times over the weekend mainly because moving things from John’s room ready for painting. Bobby and Craig moved furniture-managed to fit it into study, so a bit cramped here. It will go back in along with lots of his stuff that I’m keeping.

Kept busy as Isabel Aitken coming. She too has only been in the Pans a year, like Jane in the choir.I met her in hairdresser's and at various coffee mornings etc. as well as in church. We’ve lots in common. Lost her husband four years ago. She has twin daughters, likes music and books. Like me she’s off to a wedding down South, then she’s going to France with her daughter who has a cottage there.

Kay arrived in afternoon with new curtain rail and spongeable tablecloth I had fancied. Good for the bairns drawing.Helped me with some business. Helen came next, so I cheered up a lot Had a good laugh. Brought some more wedding photos. Nice one of me and the boys. Caught up on family news. Gave her cakes I bought for her at stroke group coffee morning on Saturday. They made nearly £1000!

Arthur put out recycling boxes, had his favourite -cup of tea with oatcakes and cheese.

Margo came with Jonathan and Ailie on Saturday. Helped me move clothes from bedroom cupboard. Both of us upset, looking at John's things. Can't bear to part with some of them yet. Went to cemetery with flowers. Ailie helped to arrange them, then she prepared my tea.A lovely salad-artistically presented. She was very proud of it.Felt a lot better after that. I'm so lucky with them all. Jonathan stayed. He’s a really sweet boy. Sat out in the garden with me, then brought me a cup of tea, just like his grandpa. He’d brought a Peter Kay video for us to watch which was hilarious at times.

Lift from Sandra to church. Jonathan came with me as brass ensemble playing. He liked the music, but I’m not sure about the rest! What a shame, I think he just went to please me. Margo came for him, then had a visit from Arthur and Stephen.

Monday morning Rae arrived early. Afraid I was pretty upset as I’d had a dream about John and woke up crying. She was very comforting and soon cheered me up. We used to call her “Rae’s a Laugh” at school. Chris took me up for lunch, so had a good blether with her too.

I know I’m blessed with all those friends and my family, but I miss John so much at times.

“The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall.

Theatre Visit

Thursday, 3rd October

Went round to Jean’s to discuss theatre visits. She always makes our morning tea/coffee so special. with cups and saucers and lovely napkins and most all her home baking, Gardener here in afternoon, so everything looking much tidier.

Thoroughly enjoyed “The Importance of being Earnest”, though we all agreed that Penelope Keith was a big disappointment. She didn’t come across as the imposing character we all expect Lady Bracknell to be. In fact, we could hardly hear her voice. I’ve spoken to others who were there and they said the same. The younger characters were much better and of course the costumes and sets were excellent..

Friday, 4th October.

Usual shopping and hairdresser’s. Jean D’Arcy arrived in afternoon. So nice to see her. She was at Preston Lodge making arrangements for the prelim invigilations. I promised if she was stuck any time I would come up, thought I’m glad I don’t do it now on a regular basis. Sandra phone to ask me over for wine/ coffee/ tea. It was lovely sitting on her garden patio and she’s gradually putting her stamp on the house, with her books, plants etc.

Choir practice at night. New member, Jane, arrived. A newcomer to Prestonpans and an experienced contralto. It made a difference having harmony again.

Harvest Moon

Wednesday 2nd October

Another beautiful day yesterday. Birds here first thing, but noise from workmen scared them away. Helen arrived for lunch. Brought photos of me at the British Museum. Also black and white ones of Rory and Iain. I remember John used to develop and print his own photos when we were young. He made the enlarger out of his Mum’s old chip pan! Used to take me into the darkroom to help him!!!!!!

Met Julie on way to Tranent. Talking about Callum doing so well in the half Marathon. Bobby showed me photos of him at day centre with her and Fiona. Must go round there some time. It's just that it reminds me so much of John playing his "box" there

Really enjoyed listening to Michael Ondaatje and discussion afterwards.Louise managed to get parked right at door. Last time I was at Queen’s Hall was when I was still working. The speaker then was one of my favourite poets, Seamus Heaney

.On way home couldn’t believe it when we saw the harvest moon. Beautiful golden colour like the ones in fairy stories. Very low in sky, so we went down the coast road to Port Seton to get a better view. Giggling and laughing at ourselves “chasing the moon!”

Not so nice weatherwise today. Margaret arrived. told me Andrew Muir had died. A great character. Businessman, Piper, Soldier -a true Panner, who did a lot for Prestonpans all his life. Chris phoned-Tom Greenlaw not so well. Rita here in afternoon, brought some of her lovely sewing to show me. Helen called in. Telling us she’s buying a caravan! Bobby phoned. He’s arranged for Craig to come with him to move bedroom furniture on Friday evening . Arthur, Margo, Kay phoned later.

Summer in October

Monday 1st October

Beautiful day. Bedding plants still blooming. Almost like summer in afternoon, with clouds of midges dancing about. Karen brought brown bin back in. Collection day changed to Wednesday ( same as recycling boxes). Sat in seat next to hut with my morning cuppa with Karen. Their garden is taking shape now. They’re trying to get it organised before winter sets in. Chris can’t come as she’s taking Cathie to hospital. Bobby phoned. Going to phone Craig to come with him to move furniture for painter.

Went for usual walk in afternoon.Chatted to Nettie and Isa. Called in to Dick’s. Joyce so pleased I’m going to theatre with them on Thursday to see “The Importance of Being Earnest. Going to Queen’s hall with Louise tomorrow to hear Michael Ondaatje (The English Patient). Sandra can’t go, so gave me her ticket. Hope I’m not overdoing things, but Louise says it will be quite a short talk and she'll drop me and go and park.

Margo phoned. Discussed her programmes for Assembly music up to Christmas. Looked out some songs and typed up words for overhead.Arthur came along. Had a good chat.. Catherine not very well.Balaclava nearly finished, but I think it’s going to be too small!

Family visits

Sunday, 30thSeptember

Pretty mild morning.Ina gave me lift to church as Sandra playing at Cockenzie. Found it quite warm in church, as heating’s come on for winter.Kay arrived with boys and made a start on preparing John’s bedroom for decorator. I know I should have done it right away but I kept putting it off. Kay is great. So loving, yet so practical. She brought boxes and packed everything temporarily so that I can put what I want back in.Felt a bit upset at times but Douglas so sweet.Kept giving my arm a wee squeeze. Robert was funny, being important, dusting ornaments etc before putting them in boxes. Hopefully the boys will manage to move the furniture into the hall this week or maybe the weekend.

Wasn’t sure if brown bin went out or not. Karen next door came over and took it out for me when I asked her about it. Margo and bairns came. Brought my tea. Keir looked so smart in rugby shirt Kay had brought for his 9th Birthday. Ailie helped me sort out my winter clothes. Had a good laugh when she imitated Sumo wrestlers with Keir.Especially as they're both so skinny!

Jonathan said he’s to prepare a talk on a book in English. Teacher suggested “A Clockwork Orange”. I was really taken aback. Haven’t read it myself, but I know it’s controversial and the film was banned or something. Must ask Christine what she thinks, as I’ve been out of the classroom for a while now, so I may be out of touch.Jonathan is a mature reader for his age, but I’m still a bit worried. I enjoyed Ian McEwan’s “On Chesil Beach”. Tension builds up, so that you’re hoping all the time that the young couple’s problems will be resolved. Very moving.

Garden privacy

Saturday 29th September

Couldn’t believe my eyes when I wandered through to the kitchen this morning. Five workmen on the roof of the house opposite (well one down) cutting out a big dormer window. Felt as if my privacy was being invaded, but it’s ok. The young couple who live there are expecting their second baby, so they must be converting the whole attic to make more room. John always wanted to do our attic, when the bairns were wee, but we couldn’t afford it and anyway we hadn’t bought the house then. Actually our hut shields the garden and there are trees for privacy. The little shelter John made for me is still quite secluded.

Did some washing and ironing, then shopping online. Wrote a few letters, which were long overdue, then went for a walk when the sun came out. Later Jean and I went to Goth for tea. Enjoyed it very much. Nice atmosphere. Met some interesting people, who were asking us all about the Pans. Bobby gave us a lift down, but we got the bus back up.

Bird of Paradise

Friday 28th September

Usual Friday. A little shopping before having my hair done. It needed cutting today so a bit tidier looking. It still amazes me that it stays nice without a perm.Must be the way Sharon cuts it. Enjoyed tasty lentil soup and assorted sandwiches at the lunch. They made over £500 for Macmillan Nurses. John always enjoyed Audrey, his Macmillan nurse, coming to visit. She was a very calm, cheerful person and came to see me even after he died.Bobby came in afternoon. Brought a video, which John had given to Julie and Fiona for the day centre. It’s of an old gala day party and it brought back many memories. Fiona is in it and so is John. He looked so handsome. Mum is in it too, looking very frail.Phoned Douglas to see how his school’s coffee morning went. and he was telling me that his job was to escort people round the school and tell them all about it. Kay was serving coffee and teas.Watering my Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) today, I noticed there are three new leaves growing. Hopefully that means there will be more blooms in January. Last year there were only two, but the first year it bloomed there were four! Catherine and Arthur brought it from Madeira five years ago and it was just a stick. We were so thrilled when the first flowers appeared three years later. No Coronation Street tonight, but I’m going to watch River City, which has improved recently.

Domestic Goddess

Thursday 27th September

Been quite domesticated today. Cleaned all worktops, cooker and bathroom thoroughly. Margaret comes to help me every fortnight, but I can manage these kind of tasks on my own. Stewed the apples which have already fallen and put them in freezer. Found peeling the apples quite difficult, as my hands are a bit painful. Missed John, as he used to peel them for me. In fact we made apple jelly together, but I don’t think I could manage that now and anyway I woulld never use it. John liked it on his morning toast, instead of marmalade.

Phoned Helen to see how she got on at hospital yesterday, but she is fine. Al away helping Kirsten, so she is watching the gallery. The exhibition just now is craft work by three women. Very unusual, but some pieces are really beautiful, Lovely handmade little bags, delicate pictures on silk and ornaments made from felt.

Dick brought Joyce along as she was fed up and he wanted to go to B&Q. I’m taking her to a lunch in the church hall tomorrow in aid of the Macmillan Nurses. Jean came later, bringing a piece of her home made loaf, so we had a slice with our cup of tea.Asked her what to do with buddleia cutting she had given me as it looks a bit leggy, but she said it needed planted out in the garden to harden over the winter. She is an expert on plants. Bobby called in on way home with bread and milk as I was running short. Told him I would have managed till tomorrow, though I do like plenty on my porridge. Arthur phoned. Playing at Labour club tomorrow so practising tonight with his guest artiste Chris Day who is teaching him classical guitar.

Must start preparing for Christmas. Hope to get most things online. TV rubbish tonight, so watched an old film I had taped this afternoon. Enjoyed it, but I remember seeing it when it first came out. Getting on fine with balaclava. It was cold enough to wear one today.

John and Callum

Wednesday 26th September

Managed to get through yesterday OK with the help of family and friends. Can’t believe it is a year since John died. Last week, I kept remembering what we had been doing the year before, and thinking about those last few days and treasuring all the memories of our long and happy life together. Helen came up early and had breakfast, then Kay arrived with flowers. Went to his grave with the roses Kay brought and she tidied up the leaves and dead headed some of the geraniums, Bobby had planted. The sun shone brightly and there was even the beginning of a rainbow in the sky, which cheered me up a little. Went to Haddington and did a little shopping and then had lunch at a little cafe called the “The Pantry.” Looked out some things for Douglas and Robert to take to their school coffee mornig in aid of Macmillan Nurses when we came back, then had a wee rest in afternoon. Jonathan phoned when he came in from school.More phone calls and visits at night and Stephen stayed a wee while when he came to put out recycling boxes. Phoned and emailed to thank those dear friends who had sent cards and messages

Keir was nine on Monday and I had sent his card and present, but phoned to ask what book he would like from Play.com as I know he likes Jeremy Pratchett but I know he already has quite a few. Ordered a Jacqueline Wilson one for Ailie.

Big day on Sunday, as Callum was running in Prestonpans Half Marathon on behalf of Cancer Research in memory of his Grandpa. He had John’s photo printed on the back of his T Shirt and raised over six hundred pounds. Went up to see him on the final stretch and cheered him on. I felt very proud of him.

My trip to London for Rory and Ian’s wedding was a big highlight for me as I had a great time, not only at the wedding but enjoying the whole weekend. Travelling first class was so comfortable, as was our hotel and we had lots of laughs, one being when I discovered the house phone in the bottom of my case when I arrived!

Our hotel was “The Russell’ in Russell Square and I found the area round about fascinating as it was near Bloomsbury and the British Museum, which we even managed to visit. I even enjoyed being delayed in the taxi on the way to Old Marylebone Town Hall for the civil ceremony as I was interested as plaques on walls and well known names of streets caught my eye.The cake was to be a surprise and it certainly was, as it was a big circular table covered on Tunnocks teacakes with a big one in the middle. One of their friends, Laura had made it, covered it with silver foil and another had painted the red stripes, even putting their names and date on top!

Today Sandra invited me over for lunch, as Sheila from school was coming from town. It was great to see her, as she is quite a character and we have lots in common, so the three of us had lots of laughs and it was good to hear all she had been doing as she’s always travelling around. She’s off to Prague next week, then on to Austria for another week and, as she said, who knows after that! Always on her own and doing everything cheaply too.

Rita here in afternoon, so we caught up, talking about our knitting etc. She has been doing exquisite wee baby hats, some from patterns I had given her, others from patterns she had made up herself. The balaclava I’m knitting looked quite clumsy in comparison.

Rory's wedding

4th September, 2007

Think it's about time I started blogging again. There's so much I could have put in it since the last time. Been out and about quite a bit, felt pretty low some days as September approached, thinking about the 25th, but I'm blessed with my loving family and friends who are an enormous help.

I'm a bit apprehensive, but,at the same time excited, about going to Rory's wedding in London at the weekend. I haven't even had the confidence to go to Edinburgh for ages, never mind the great metropolis, but Helen, Al, Kirsten and Kenny are going, so I'll be well looked after. We're travelling first class, going to a posh hotel and I'm being taxied everywhere,so it looks as if I'll be completely spoiled. It's just the thought of all the crowds of people and the noise.Sure sign of getting old.Catherine borrowed a lovely hat for me - I just wish John could see it.

Jonathan's returm

Thursday 9th August
Another lovely day.Helen arrived and we looked at my suit for the wedding. Was going to sponge skirt myself, but decided not to risk it, so she’s taking it to a reliable cleaner.I think she may be kidding. but she says that everyone’s wearing hats to the wedding! Haven’t worn a hat in years, except in winter- for warmth.

Margo and John and the three bairns came to finish tidying front garden having picked up Jonathan on his return from Aberdeen Music Festival. It was great to see him and he seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed himself. There were choirs there from all over the world and as well as doing lots of concert they were able to socialise, going to a musical show a ceilidh, a disco etc..Couldn’t believe it when he sent me a text message 1.40 am one morning!

Keir and Ailie brought the cd rom of “Music Island Adventure” they won at the Fringe show, so they let me see it. It’s great and a they were enjoying doing all the games and learning at the same time. I’ve ordered one for Douglas and Robert.

Friday,10th August

Visit from Stuart bringing me lovely photo of him with Lisa. He took me to my doctor’s appointment, then to hairdresser. They’re off on holiday to Corfu for two week.

Lovely to meet Jan in the Co-op with her wee ones. They are so sweet and friendly, though they must be quite a handful for her. I think she’s amazing doing all the things she does. Was great having a chat face to face and we seemed to cover quite a few topics in a short time. Had a good laugh about the “shepee”. Dick picked me up and I had lunch with him and Joyce. They’re off to Barcelona in three weeks.

Caught up with housework in afternoon, then had a wee rest before going to the play “Catriona” in the Goth. It was excellent and so imaginatively done. The company had adapted the story themselves, so that the characters from “Kidnapped” were seen to be persuading Stevenson to tie up the loose ends of their story and write a sequel -hence “Catriona”. Jean and Louise came in for a cup of tea and enjoyed blethering until about 11.30. That's me, who's usually in bed before 10!!

New neighbour

Wednesday, 8th August

Another beautiful day. Lots of sparrows and my pair of blackbirds in the garden. They seem to know the drill and wait until I’ve taken Lucy in before I bring out the goodies. They were joined by some young starlings, so there was a lot of competition. Later I went out to do some dead heading and the blackbirds hopped around my feet. Kay phoned from the beach at North Berwick. I said I hoped they weren’t playing in a boat! Managed to hang out washing before Margaret arrived to help. I must say it always gives me a feeling of satisfaction, watching sheets blowing gently on such a day as this. Tumble dryers are wonderful when it’s raining though. Oh, how I wish I’d had one when the twins were wee. All those terry towelling nappies!

New neighbour, Karen, asked me over for cup of tea. Enjoyed our chat and she says she’s very happy in her new home. They’ve done a lot of work in the house and garden already. Later, Rita came and we had a look through my knitting patterns, but couldn’t find the one she was looking for .Went out a walk. View over the Forth from the top of Gardiner Road was outstanding. I never tire of it

Margo phoned to say that the show they saw was really good, but there were only fifteen people there. Keir won a CD of it, so they’re bringing it to let me see tomorrow. Arthur arrived and printed out a song he wants to learn. The band is playing at a wedding in Dynamic Earth on Friday

Happy Visit, Snails, Poem

Tuesday. 7th August

Pretty sore this morning, but I think it’s because I slept so late. I'm like the "Tin Man', I need an oil can. Kay arrived with the boys and their wee cousin, Alexander, who is twenty one months. What a happy wee soul and so loving. Every time we hummed a tune, he started dancing and he takes delight in everything. Kay went for my prescription and he was quite happy to stay with me. We wandered round the garden so that Douglas and Robert collected petals to take home to press. Of course he wanted to join in too.

After they were away, found three snails near my two biggest hostas, which are nearly eaten away.Have tried eradicating them with beer and slug pellets, but nothing seems to work. Hate actually killing any creature, so put them in compost bin. They’ll maybe chomp away in there for a wee while. On the other hand they may get bigger and bigger, escape and eat all my plants! I’m reminded of this poem.

For a Five-Year-Old

A snail is climbing up the window-sill
into your room, after a night of rain.
You call me in to see, and I explain
that it would be unkind to leave it there:
it might crawl to the floor; we must take care
that no one squashes it. You understand,
and carry it outside, with careful hand,
to eat a daffodil.

I see, then, that a kind of faith prevails:
your gentleness is moulded still by words
from me, who have trapped mice and shot wild birds,
from me, who drowned your kittens, who betrayed
your closest relatives, and who purveyed
the harshest kind of truth to many another.
But that is how things are: I am your mother,
And we are kind to snails.

Holidaymaker's return

Monday, 6th August

I’m becoming a real telly addict. Enjoyed watching another film, “Educating Rita” on Sunday night.. Very funny and it reminded me of my own university experience, Helen came up early and helped me to finish cleaning conservatory. Discussed plans for going to London for Rory and Ian’s civil ceremony next month. Still not very confident about going, as I’m even wary of going to Edinburgh now. However, we’re going by train from Friday till Monday to a nice hotel and I know I’ll be well looked after By Helen and Al.

Margo, John Ailie and Keir arrived. Bairns brought holiday presents of a wee cat ornament and Betty Boop fridge magnet. Margo brought fudge (mmmm), and marmalade assortment. Keir delighted that lettuce he planted in pots had grown. They both wanted to make perfume, with flower petals, so managed to find dishes for them. Good fun. They’d brought loads of stuff for lunch and I didn’t have to do anything. Booked a Festival show for them produced by Margo’s former music teacher.Jonathan still away with his choir at Aberdeen International Music Festival.Just away when Bobby phoned, checking if washing machine ok. Been away fishing all weekend.

Panicked at night, when I thought my hard disk had gone forever. I was trying to put Margo’s photos in a folder and they all appeared on my desktop so couldn’t see it. Arthur said it was just behind them all and retrieved it. Wish I understood computers more. Watched a good programme about Thomas Telford and remembered John explaining how aqueducts work, but I still find the principle quite amazing.

Cinema in the fifties

Sunday, 5th August

Came in front door from church and heard weird noises in conservatory. Arghhhhhhhhhh! A blackbird was fluttering about and cat was trying to catch it.. Managed to bring cat indoors, went out front door, round the back to find the bird sitting on top of the glass door! Poor thing seemed paralysed and no wonder! Tried to tempt it down with bread, but finally gave it a gentle help with a newspaper and it fluttered out. What a mess! The suite was covered in big splodges so cleaned with “Vanish” and hope it hasn’t stained permanently. Cleaned floor a bit, but Margo will help tomorrow when they come to do the garden.

Watched film set in Venice, directed by David Lean and starring Katherine Hepburn and Rossano Brassi. Remember seeing it with John in the Regal cinema in Musselburgh in the fifties.Very romantic and the colour photography was outstanding. It was funny when the sex scene was symbolised by fireworks going off! I'm getting into bad habits, watching films in afternoon

Bamburgh beach

Saturday,4th August

Miss John all the time, but especially at weekends. When trying to put begonias into bigger tubs I was reminded of how he set up an old table for me to work on, so that I wouldn’t have to bend. He was always thinking of ways to make my life easier all through our married life. I’d better stop for the moment, or I won’t be able to see to type this.

Margo phoned to say she’s back and sent me some photographs of Berwick and Bamburgh castle and beach. While they were there a boy and girl were swept out to sea in their dinghy, which capsized. Their father was distraught and tried to reach them. The girl managed to swim ashore but the wee boy was in the water for ages.A passing yacht rescued him before the helicopter arrived, but he was taken away to hospital suffering from hypothermia.Ailie and Keir were pretty frightened and kept asking if the wee boy would be all right. It’s terrifying how quickly accidents like that can happen. I think something similar happened at North Berwick last week and at Port Seton last year a wee boy fell into the harbour while fishing.

Went along to see Joyce. She was so pleased to see me and it makes me ashamed to moan about my aches and pains when I see her falling about all over the place. Told me she had been to see the hovercraft with the day centre. She always keeps so cheerful too. Combed her hair for her and tidied up, but she insisted on making a cup of tea herself. I’m always scared she falls when I’m there as I’d never be able to lift her up. Dick’s baskets are looking lovely.

Lunch in the country

Friday. 3rd August

Tickets arrived this morning for the three shows we’ve booked at the Brunton. Booked tickets for “Catriona” in the Goth next week. Enjoyed my visit to Smeaton gardens with Chris, Ella and Mary. Seemed as if we were far out in the country as lots of sheep in our path and we even saw a deer in the distance. It’s an old walled Garden, with lovely herbaceous plants and apple trees, quinces, pears etc all round the walls. In the old greenhouses were grapes and what we thought might be apricots!. The tearoom was inside an old greenhouse, with oilcloth tablecloths and old fashioned tea sets.Pleasant homely atmosphere and delicious food

Washing machine repair man arrived just after I came home, so everything now under control. Helen arrived with Evelyn and her twins, Eilidh and Rowan. They are so pretty and talented, singing all kinds of songs. Couldn’t believe it when they started telling me about Pride and Prejudice, as they’re only eight. They haven’t read the books obviously, but they compared the characters in the two films with great enthusiasm.

Saw a colourful kite flying over the home. Not a big one, like those down on the links, but an ordinary child’s kite. Reminded me of the ones John used to make for the boys when they were wee. He made them perfectly of course, from garden canes borrowed from my dad, old pieces of brown paper, string and newspaper. My dad used to call them “draigons”. Lots of fun for all concerned.

Jedburgh Abbey

Friday 2nd August

Better day again, so managed to dry clothes. Kay and the boys arrived. They were very excited about being away in their tent.and dying to tell me about it.They also visited Jedburgh, where Douglas was very interested in the abbey and how Robert the Bruce’s heart was buried there. Robert was more interested in the spider story! They were also keen to tell me that Douglas is now a “rookie” lifeguard and can save me if I’m scared in the swimming pool!!! Also Robert can jump in without being caught by his mum and can swim on his own. I just love to hear their stories. Helen arrived, so they told her all about it too..She did my shopping while I was at hairdresser. Enjoyed being at Catherine and Arthur’s for tea again.

Visiting, Knitting, Guides

Thursday Ist August

Knew I should have washed yesterday when it was sunny, but did it anyway hoping the rain would go off. Washing machine didn’t spin properly, so put towels in tumble dryer ( which I’ve been trying to avoid to conserve energy) and ended up hanging them out dripping wet! Bobby’s coming up to try to sort things out. Other than that had a good day.Had a lovely afternoon at Rita’s and admired her latest knitting and patchwork. She bought cotton at Lidl’s and knitted two tops, which only cost about four pounds each and she made up the pattern herself. She inspired me a bit, so I looked out my knitting, which has been languishing in the cupboard for ages and have started knitting one of my baby hats again. They’re quite handy for a wee present, although hand knitted clothes aren’t so popular nowadays.

Listened to programme on radio about 100 years of Scouting and it brought back many happy memories of my time in the Brownies and Guides, I’m glad some of the principles have changed, such as now embracing all races, religions and colours, but some of the main values, I feel are still very relevant today, such as caring for others respect for the environment, learning new skills and how to work as a team. Learning to read an ordnance survey map in the Guides stood me in good stead, when I sat Higher Geography for University entrance!

Sunny days

Tuesday, 31st July

Summer seems to be here at last,as the sun's been shining today and yesterday. Everyone who comes in admires the flowers spilling over the path. Lots of sparrows in the garden and one or two blackbirds. It's good to see them back again. Yesterday Rae arrived and we discussed the physiotherapy.Decided to wait to talk to my doctor when he comes back from holiday. Chris here for lunch.Talked about her family's visit to Dubai to visit Andrew. Interesting photos, one of a ski slope built inside a shopping mall and another of the huge buildings shaped like a sail! Other tall buildings are built on land reclaimed from the sea! We talked about the effect of it all on the environment. Later went to sit in the wee shelter John made for me so I could read in the shade.Noticed a bramble at my feet, thought a bird a had dropped it but noticed a bush peeking over the fence from Mary my neighbour.Must ask her if there are lots of berries.Maybe she'll give me some! Arthur says he'd like them for his fruit drinks.

Today Nan and Jerry came for lunch.I'm getting really lazy about cooking, but they really enjoyed the "cairry oot" I'd ordered from "The Filling Station", especially the "lumpy-bumpy" cake.! John would have enjoyed it too.Helen collected the order and Catherine came in, so and helped to dish up.Walked up to bus with them then took the long way home. Felt legs a bit sore when I got in, but OK after I put my feet up a wee while and read a bit.Must try to walk a bit more each day.

Weekend News

Sunday, 29th July

Friday - usual little shopping and hairdresser. In the co-op met one of the actors who was in the play "Battle of Pots and Pans" and told him how much I enjoyed it.Said there is a performance of a play based on "Catriona" by RLS in the Goth in August. Must check it out and see Jean and Sandra. I'm sure they'll want to go. We really enjoyed the last two plays which were on as part of the Fringe ( was it three years ago?) He also mentioned the possibility of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" being performed in Cuthill Park, which would be super, though I think it might be difficult to get a large audience.Good luck to the company anyway.

Saturday - Put eggs in microwave and Bang! What a mess. One compensation was it made me give all the work surfaces a good clean. Arthur was laughing when I told him, as he came in when I had just finished. Good job I don't cook in it very often. Kay phoned to say the boys were really enjoying the outdoor life and so was she by the sounds of her.Was going to tape the old version of "The Thirty Nine steps", but ended up watching it.Always feel guilty about watching TV in daytime. Not only that I then watched a bit of "A Town like Alice', which I found very moving.Bobby and Pauline arrived after tea with a lovely bunch of lilies. Bobby made me laugh as usual.

Sunday- Arthur gave me a lift to church as Ina still in Canada. Miss her cheery presence in choir. Bairns from holiday club took service. All about Heroes and it was very well done. Absolutely freezing in church though.I was wishing I had my my winter clothes back on. Stephen came in and watered plants for me. Also locked hut as I couldn't turn the key last night. Was interested in article in paper about Cuba, so looked it out for him. Had a little walk in afternoon.Pretty sore now.Rae coming tomorrow, so think I'll get her to arrange the deep massage from her physio.

Nights out, Shakespeare on TV

Thursday, 26th July.

Lots of bees on the honeysuckle this morning.

"How doth the little busy bee
Improve each each shining hour,
And gather honey all the day
From every opening flower."
by Isaac Watts -"Against Idleness"

Once the rain started they disappeared of course.Had to turn back for umbrella on way to Jean's, rain was so heavy.Had a look at Brunton Theatre brochure, so going to book for three shows for Autumn. Also discussed our usual concert at Fringe, then she persuaded me to stay for lunch. Talked about John and Jimmy a lot. She is a good help, as she can understand how I am feeling at the moment. Wonder how Kay, Gavin and boys are doing in their tent. Hope it's not too wet for them!

Watched a modern version of " A Midsummer Night's Dream on E4. It was a bit Americanised, but still magical. Going to watch "Still Game" now.

Lunching out again

Wednesday 25th July

Helen asked where I wanted to go for lunch after my appointment at Hearing aid clinic. She suggested Braid Hills Hotel Bistro, which was lovely. Afterwards went a run and then to Luca's in Musselburgh for an ice cream.I'll be putting on weight again, if I go on like this! Washing all dry so ironed a few things and put it away. Margo phoned. Bairns away on the hovercraft with the Aunties. I'm dying to hear how they got on. I would love to go on it myself, but I couldn't queue for hours!

Dick and Joyce came along. They are so proud about Alex's first piece of reporting and brought the paper to let me see. Hope he gets a permament job soon. He's worked so hard to get his degree.Message on phone from Jean, so got in touch.Going round tomorrow. I was worried about her as she went down to her son's, who lives in Warwickshire and I wondered if she 'd been affected by the floods. They had problems on the road going down, but not too bad. We'll have a good blether tomorrow.

Stuart came to put out bucket.Asked him to lock hut. Blethered a bit. then he said he heard a noise. Lucy must have slipped into hut, before he locked it! Good job he heard her mewing, or she would have been in there all night!

Must finish reading "Miss Garnet's Angel" before I start on Harry Potter.
