Friday, 5th December.
Just watched a lovely programme on BBC 4 about Nana Mouskouri. Really enjoyed it, mainly because John used to encourage me to learn lots of her songs. She always comes across as a really warm friendly person and I've always admired her ability to sing in so many different languages.
The doctor phoned again. I've to go to Longniddry to have a blood and urine test done to send to a rheumatologist! Sounds ominous! Not really, just making sure my own doctor is giving me the right medication. The rest of the day was the usual routine. Arthur came along to take me shopping and we had a blether and a cup of tea first. My new cleaner is very good and it was great to come back in from shopping and find everything spick and span.
Managed to write more cards and check my Christmas list, so I'm getting there. Next thing is getting all the Christmas stuff out of the cupboard. Think Margo's coming on Sunday, so she'll give me a hand. Kay is busy rehearsing for her concert on Sunday.

Parties galore
Thursday, 4th December 2008.
Getting out of habit of blogging again. Think it's because I'm so tired and not feeling well. Still trying to get out and about though! Was at Christmas Fayre on Saturday which was very well attended. Nice to see Jan and family there. Managed church on Sunday and Margo came in afternoon with Ailie and Keir. Lovely to see them. Arthur came along later. We had a good blether. I'm going there for Christmas as Catherine's Mum and Dad are going to be there. They are both pretty frail.
Got phone call from Preston Lodge asking me to get numbers for the Senior Citizen's Christmas Party on 11th December. Pauline Christine, who organises it taught at Ross High beside me. It's always very good and we're given a lovely tea and a free raffle. It's all free! We're very lucky in the Pans!
History Society party on Tuesday night. Stephen gave me a lift round as roads pretty slippy. Nice relaxing evening, with everyone singing carols accompanied by young Gavin on the cornet. Delicious home made buffet made by Dorothy (Ian Telford's wife) and Annette Gilroy, then watched film of Scots comedian Chic Murray which was very funny, then Santa arrived and gave us all a present.
Yesterday at lunch in aid of Chas in Chalmers church Port Seton. Helen took Rita, Jean and I down. Lovely soup, mince pies and Christmas cake. Bought some delicious home baking and hand made pressies. Spoke to lots of people I hadn't seen for ages.
When we came home Helen said she was going to Marks at the Fort and asked if I wanted to come. Didn't really feel like it, but said I'd sit in the car. However, was all right when I got a trolley to lean on, so got one or two things. Helen went into Border books and got me 'Maw Broon's But and Ben Cookbook" for Dick. I'd already bought Bobby a book about Chic Murray as he's very good at impersonating him.
Doctor phoned today about blood test results.Sending me new prescription tomorrow so hopefully will feel better soon.

Christmassy things
Thursday, 27th November.
Off early to Port Seton for blood test, so here's hoping it reveals something so as I can get some relief. Saying that, got quite a lot done when I got back. Sorted cards into envelopes for Saturday, printed out Christmas list and labels, so ready to start writing them. Should have started ages ago of course.
Afternoon tea later but very few people there to start with. However, filled up a bit later and lots of nice goodies to eat. Disappointing for Pauline, Rosemary etc. but they never fail to be cheerful.Sandra came in with Mrs Marshall and Elizabeth. She's off to Newcastle for two or three days this week.Got a good laugh with Peggy Muir reminiscing.
Dick brought Joyce along later. He is worried about the progression of her illness. She can hardly speak now, yet she's OK on the phone. He went away to the shops and I managed to get her to speak a bit more, we even managed to sing together, so maybe I should try that a bit more if it would help. Must ask him if Huntington's society could not do more to help. I think she needs speech therapy.
Not much on telly, so off to bed with Little Dorrit.

Douglas's phone
Tuesday, 25th November.
Helen came up bringing something for my tea. She's off to London again tomorrow with friends on a theatre break.
Douglas's 11th Birthday today. He phoned whenever he came in from school to tell me he had a mobile phone. He was SO excited!Must send him a text.
Just before seven o'clock the doctor phoned to say my blood tests were inconclusive and I've to have more taken on Thursday morning. Honestly, all I know is that I can hardly walk and and every part of my body is aching. It would be very easy to stay in all the time, but I feel I must try to go out. It takes my mind of it a bit. Stephen gave me a lift and came back for me.
He asked me if I still had copies of the talk I gave to St Gabriel's P7 about the war and photos, ration books etc as Lara is doing that at primary just now, so I said I'd have a look.

Visiting
Monday, 24th November.
Slept right through last night instead of my sleep being broken as it usually is. Must have been all the excitement at Douglas's party! Pretty sore and stiff though, as usual.Sat and read the Sunday Times for so long, was just going to get dressed when Lilian arrived with some magazines.
Had to hurry then to tidy up kitchen - and myself as Chris coming to take me up to hers for lunch and then to her friend Cathie's at Macmerry. Enjoyed that. Cathie's house has a beautiful outlook, fields as far as the eye can see and so far no houses being built!
Managed to tidy up the study a bit more and new cleaner phoned thank goodness. Coming to see me on Wednesday. Helen coming tomorrow bringing my cards etc. Al's exhibition going well.
Watched telly as usual, but there are so many changes in Corrie, I'm beginning to wonder who all the people are!
Stephen called in with some soup for me he had been making.Lovely to see him.
Jean got "Prezza" (John Prescott's autobiography) from the library, so gave me it to hand in. I'm quite enjoying it. Don't know why he has such a big chip on his shoulder as to reach the office of deputy prime minister from such lowly beginnings is quite an
achievement! His wife must be a saint though!
Hope doctor phones tomorrow with results of my tests.

Birthday Party
Sunday, 23rd November.
Arthur took me to East Linton to Douglas's 11th birthday party. We had a good laugh at Alexander, their wee cousin aged three. He was really funny, though very wild. Jerry called him Hurricane Henderson! It was good to be in cheerful company , but I miss John on these family occasions.
Telly seems to be rubbish tonight so managed to tidy up the study and threw a lot out, sorted out photos etc.
Margo phoned, when I came in telling me about playing at the Rugby Club dance in the Royal Musselburgh.Lots of people she knew there. Arthutr was talking about it too.He always enjoys playing, especially locally.
Feel pretty tired so I'm off to bed.

Continuing the London experience
Saturday 22nd November
Saturday, 8th November.
Would like to have gone a sail down the Thames but it was pretty cold, so Helen and I took the tour bus(me in wheelchair) but it was a disaster and an expensive one! Forty Pounds and we hardly saw a thing for scaffolding, being re-routed and always having to change buses! Rory said we'd have been cheaper taking a taxi! He said we should write to the bus company.
However, everything turned out fine as we finally got off near Trafalgar Square, made our way to Westminster Abbey and heard a military band playing followed by a huge crowd carrying green and white flags. Turned out it was the ninetieth anniversary of Poland's Liberation day.
I was really worried about Helen pushing me in the chair, but she said she was fine with it and we stopped lots of times
Lingered a while looking at the poppies and crosses outside Westminster Abbey.Really brings it home thinking about all those young lives lost-and still being lost!
Went down the Mall, looking at at all the memorials. One for all the women was impressive, just their uniforms hanging on pegs ready to be put on at short notice.Another one of the RAF looked as if the men were running to their planes.
Loads of people around, preparing for Sunday. When we came back up the band was playing in the Square and the crowds were singing Polish national songs. If I'd known the words, I would have joined in. Then a pop singer did a spot and he wowed the crowds too.
Took a taxi back.A nice cheerful,Cockney cabby.Took us round to see a spectacular firework display.
A wee rest, then met Rory and Ian at Giraffe in the Brunswick Centre and again had a lovely meal and enjoyed people watching and a blether.
Sunday Rory and Ian took me to the morning concert in the Wigmore Hall, while Helen and Al went shopping. I've always wanted to go there and I wasn't disappointed, as I really enjoyed it. A young Portugese string quartet were playing and a glass of sherry was included. Felt very cultured!!!! Off to meet Helen and Al in John Lewis.
While waiting Rory helped me choose a hat, as my head was very cold. I'd kidded Helen I would buy one with pigtails, but ended up with a red "tammy". Even the colour made me feel warmer.
Had lunch, then off to Liberty's. Beautiful shop, but so expensive! Saw lovely scarves I wanted to buy for the girls. Rory looked at the price. They were £90!
Back to hotel, then round to the flat where we had a good blether and a Chinese meal.
Monday morning after breakfast went to wee shop nearby, to buy stuff for the bairns, then off to King's Cross and home.
I'm so lucky having Helen as my sister.

The London experience
Wednesday, 19th November.
Well, here I am blogging again and about time too. Can't do a daily one, so just some highlights.Really enjoyed Chris and Jim's Golden wedding at the Juniper Lea hotel. The meal was superb and of course the music was excellent thanks to Jim and Ron. I managed to sing their favourite song, although I felt pretty shaky.I just wished John could have been there.
The trip to London was wonderful and we seemed to pack quite a lot in. Of course having Rory and Ian knowing their way around made a big difference and Helen and Al anticipated my every need.I was really glad of the wheelchair Helen had borrowed.I enjoyed the train journey, as there's so much to see and it was very comfortable.
When we arrived and after a wee rest in our Hotel, we went to the British Library which was fascinating. I could have spent all day in there. I couldn't believe I was looking at the actual handwriting of Shakespeare, Milton, William Blake, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte etc. etc. What I found most impressive was The Lindisfarne Gospels, as the colours are still so vivid. The Wycliffe Bible was there too There was also an original of one of my favourite pieces of music "An Die Music" by Schubert and Beowulf written about 1100, which I studied as part of my English Language course.More up to date there were the lyrics of some of the Beatles songs and drawings.
Went round to Rory and Ian's flat which overlooks Brunswick Square and from there to Carluccio's in the Brunswick Centre. It was very busy, so there was a great atmosphere
Really enjoyed people watching and had a delicious meal and made plans for Saturday.
Rory thought I'd be interested in the the Foundling Museum which was very near the flat and I certainly was. I think I'd read about it somewhere before. London's original home for abandoned children and London's first public art gallery. The paintings were lovely and of particular interest to me was to learn that Handel was one of the benefactors of the hospital and regular performances of the Messiah raised money for the hospital. I sat in a chair and listened to part of the Messiah. Didn't know Helen was taking a photo of me next to Handel's portrait! I was some sight!
It was sad to see the pathetic little mementoes some of the poor mothers had left for their children when they handed them over to the hospital.

I'm never going to finish this post if I don't stop going into so much detail!

Cute visitors
Thursday 17th October.
Lovely visit from Jan and the girls. They’re so cute and it’s a long time since I’ve had wee girls running round the garden. Enjoyed the chat with Jan too. Phoned Valerie later. Seems a bit better. Text from Helen. Going to see her tomorrow when she comes home. Sitting in living room with cup of tea admired the beautiful evening sky.Wish I could paint! At choir later on.We are all quite happy now, but seemingly there have been some funny rumours flying around!
Realised on way home that I had forgotten my key- again!Knew Bobby and Helen weren’t in and Arthur was away, so phoned Stuart, who was having a band practice, but came along with a whole box of keys, some very ancient, but found it at last. I was kidding him on I would have to come and stay with him and Lisa! Must get a key for Karen and Sandra and give the rest a key ring with my name on it.
Wednesday, 16th October
Decided to strip bed and ended up washing everything in sight. Got in a right guddle. Thankfully Stephen came along later and helped make bed up.Stuart took me shopping, then brought me some of his home made soup.Looking after the old folks for their Mum and Dad. Bless them both.
Val phoned in a terrible state. Her dad’s in hospital and she seems to be at a very low ebb Tried to reassure her, and phoned again later. She now has someone staying with her but I think she needs the doctor. Helen going to see her when she comes home.
Thank goodness Rita was coming along later. She is so calm and dependable and helps me to stop worrying about everyone and everything.
Well things are gearing up on Corrie. Didn’t think I’d ever feel sorry for Carla, but it was like a Hardy moment, just when she thought she was going to find happiness with Liam, the news of Maria’s pregnancy brings her world crashing down. Off to bed early.

Oh Silver Moon in the Sky
Tuesday. 14th October.
Couldn't sleep, so decided to update blog.Another lovely day.Got started on my cards at last. Made a few mistakes in printing at first, but all right now. Always wish I’d taken a basic course in word processing, when I started using the computer, as I do things the long way round sometimes.
Did some more work in the study. Watched River City. Stuart came along to put out brown bin and Karen next door came over.
Went to lock back door and sat in the porch in the dark for a wee while, drinking in the beauty of the moon.
Monday, 13th October.
Helen here in morning, discussing our plans for London. We are staying at the Russell and Al is staying with Rory. Rory and Ian are taking me to a Sunday morning concert, and then for lunch. A visit to the British library is a must and what else I don’t know.
“The Game's Afoot” then in Corrie or“There’s going to be a murrrder!” as they say in Taggart. I must say these Tony masks look pretty menacing. It’s funny, as he was a pretty gentle character in River City. When the waiter in the restaurant appeared, I thought I was in the wrong soap, as he was Marty, the two timing husband, in River City.
Sunday, 13th,October
Decided to carry on in choir, but still a bit unhappy about new seating arrangements plus it was absolutely freezing where we were sitting.Came home, wishing John was there to tell him about choir, turned up heating, threw on extra woollie and was sitting clutching hot water bottle when Margo and bairns arrived. The sight of them warmed me immediately ! Had some lunch and heard all their stories, then they started helping move books etc. Ailie showed me the recommended book list her English teacher had given her.Jonathan was saying he is going to be studying “The Crucible” in class. I must say his English teacher seems to be setting very high standards.Ordered some books on Play.com.
Although it’s a big muddle in the study now, I’m lucky with this house being all one flat as it’s easy to move things around. I’m even more lucky having them all helping me.Once the upholsterer takes the three piece away and the cabinet is emptied, the big boys are going to move everything into the hall ready for the decorator coming on 27th.
Arthur and Catherine came in to say cheerio. They’re off to Madeira for a week. They both looked pretty tired, so they’ll enjoy the rest.Stephen came in, so Margo and I took flowers to John and tidied up. Going to put winter plants in next week. then Margo went to Aroma for paninis for tea.

Small World
Saturday,11th October,
Well,” October’s bright blue weather” seems to be true, though slightly nippier today. Amazed the Clematis at front door still blooming. Stuart gave Jean and I a lift to the Small World. where we spent a pleasant hour and lots of cash too and had a nice cup of tea and a biscuit. I bought a pretty glass beaded necklace, sweets, tea and dried fruit Going to make my nine minute dumpling in the microwave again! Don’t know what my mother would make of it. She made super “clootie dumplings”, complete with silver threepenny pieces and they used to take hours to cook! Anyway, also ordered pretty green glasses and little white bowls. Jean worked in the Small World for many years,so she knew some of the volunteers.
Went to the library, where we relaxed in the comfy chairs, while choosing our books. I ended up with two I’d read already, “The House of Mirth” and “Anna Karenina”. (not that I’m taking advice from David Cameron, as I’v e read AK already, but a long time ago)
Strolled down to the Aroma for lunch where we both had paninis. Mine was bacon and brie and Jean’s chicken and pineapple. Stuart came back for us and Kay had just arrived when we got back. Robert ran out shouting.”We’ve brought boxes Granny and I’m going to help you and he certainly did! He loved crawling ino cupboards and finding things. The decorator’s not coming for a week or two, but we got a lot done and threw a lot out!
Well I made a mistake about Corrie as I was all keyed up waiting for the murder, but it’s this week it happens!

John's cards
Friday, 10th October
Managed to get card and ink today to make John’s cards, so I’ll make a start over the weekend. Corrie not turning out as expected. Keeping everyone guessing, I suppose. Disappointed in Liam, though. Always thought it was Carla who did most of the running.

National Poetry Day
National Poetry Day
The theme is work, but I chose this one for the season.
TO AUTUMN
SEASON OF MISTS AND MELLOW FRUITFULNESS.
CLOSE BOSOM-FRIEND OF THE MATURING SUN;
CONSPIRING WITH HIM HOW TO LOAD AND BLESS
WITH FRUIT THE VINES THAT ROUND THE THATCH-EAVES RUN;
TO BEND WITH APPLES THE MOSSED COTTAGE-TREES,
AND FILL ALL FRUIT WITH RIPENESS TO THE CORE;
TO SWELL THE GOURD AND PLUMP THE HAZEL SHELLS
WITH A SWEET KERNEL; TO SET BUDDING MORE
AND STILL MORE, LATER FLOWERS FOR THE BEES,
UNTIL THEY THINK WARM DAYS WILL NEVER CEASE,
FOR SUMMER HAS O’ER-BRIMMED THEIR CLAMMY CELLS.

Song of the Shirt - a poem by Thomas Hood
With fingers weary and worn,
With eyelids heavy and red,
A woman sat, in unwomanly rags,
Plying her needle and thread
Stitch! stitch! stitch!
In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch
She sang the "Song of the Shirt."
Wednesday, 8th October
The sunny October weather continues.Got a phone call from Elsa, one of my university friends, to ask if it was ok to come down with her wee grandson after picking him up from nursery.Of course, I was delighted and expected her about elevenish. About quarter to twelve, she phoned to say she was at the top of Gardiner road and could I direct her to mine. What a laugh we had when she came in, but poor wee Oliver was shattered, so we tucked him into one of the chairs where he soon dropped off.I always enjoy her visits as it’s great to hear about all the things she’s involved in. Talked about her Book Group, her visit to Stratford, her visit to China, the Book Festival, the theatre and of course exchanged news about families and friends and losing Bobby and John to the same terrible disease and how we both cope. I gave her the Spanish novels for Oliver’s mum as she’s Spanish.
Went to choir at night but didn’t do much, as we were discussing changes being made in the layout of the church, moving things around etc. It made me think again about retiring as I joined the choir when I was in my teens and sometimes I feeI I can’t give of my best as I used to, plus I sometimes get a bit emotional at certain hymns which can be a bit embarrassing when facing the congregation! Anyway, I can still sing my heart out sitting in a pew.
Hurrah for Gordon! Showed his iron grip at last! Long may it continue!
My blogs just get longer and longer! Must cut them down a bit.

Aberlady Bay
Tuesday, 7th October.
Felt so sorry for poor Becky in Corrie last night. She’s become a more likeable character recently and was so excited about setting up home with Jason, the rotten so and so. It’s just like Tess actually. Her life was just becoming wonderful when everything comes crashing down around her.As Arthur would say "It's not real, Mum!"In real life such sad things do happen though!
Anyway off to Nan and Jerry’s.Sandra very kindly gave me a lift to the top of the road to catch the North Berwick bus. I always enjoy travelling on the coast road. Joyce, one of my neighbours sat beside me. She is a great walker and was saying she was getting worried because the corn in some fields hadn’t been cut yet, but she says they’ve all been done now. We were laughing, thinking about her going round checking up on all the farmers! Approaching Aberlady bay saw some geese taking flight, two artists sketching some of the birds that were paddling about on the ground and believe it or not two wind surfers!
Nan was waiting at the bus stop bless her and said Jerry was doing the cooking so I said I hoped he wasn’t going to swear like Gordon Ramsay! Anway, we had a lovely meal, which included Californian salad. I’d made that once for them years ago, so they always kid me on about it. All it is is an ordinary salad with lots of fruit in it. They’re always interested in what I’m doing and how I’m coping and they love the bairns of course. I think having no family of their own they’ve kind of adopted mine. I know how much they all love Auntie Nan and Uncle Jerry.
Had to get back for doctor’s appointment to get the result of my ESR blood test.It was up again, so I’ve to increase the tablets slightly for three weeks, have another blood test, then see him again. What a palaver! However I’m feeling better, but unfortunately, the steroids have made me put on weight, so goodness knows what I’ll be like now I’ve to increase the dose! My clothes are getting tighter as it is! Margo says I’ve to buy new ones!
Kay just phoned with all her news. She enjoyed a lovely concert by the Dunedin Consort in the Town House, Haddington on Sunday. I’ve been to one or two of their concerts before with Sandra and they’re really excellent. Robert came in from school today with a letter from The National Youth Choir of Scotland, testing all the pupils in primary three to see if they wanted to join the choir. East Lothian must be taking part in the scheme now. I used to wonder why they didn’t as Midlothian, West Lothian and Edinburgh schools have been taking part for ages. Jonathan started when he was in Primary Three and they’re given excellent training. Anyway, Kay says he seems quite interested so she’s going to put his name down.
Had lots of phone calls tonight and a visit and blether with Stuart when he came to put out the recycling boxes.

Pretty robin
Monday 6th October
Bright and sunny again, but definitely a nip in the air. Lovely to see a robin in among a flock of sparrows on the grass. The robin’s breast is very red and it has bluey white flashes under its wings. Some hanky panky going on in birdland I fear! Must put out some more fat balls.
I know it's a bit early,but I like this children's rhyme.
"The North Wind doth blow
And we shall have snow
And what will poor Robin do then, poor thing.
He'll sit in a barn and keep himself warm
And hide his head under his wing, poor thing."
Arthur came along for the car, as he’s going to the doctor again. I find him looking so much more like his Dad as he gets older.
Finally getting to grips with new mobile. Arthur would have put more numbers in for me, but I managed fine. Have to keep the old brain cells working as long as possible!
Managed to get in touch with the painter at last and fixed a date for him coming in a week or two, giving me plenty of time to get ready and decide what I shoud keep or throw out. Knowing me, I’ll probably hold on to everything.
Going to visit Nan and Jerry tomorrow. Been feeling really guilty, as haven’t seen them for ages, so just made up my mind and phoned.
Off to bed now, as I”m feeling really tired.I’ll have to be up early.

Cordon bleu cook
Saturday, 4th October.
An unpleasant day, weatherwise. Started putting things away in readiness for painter coming, though when that will be I don’t know as he’s still not back from holiday.
Jean phoned to ask me round for tea at hers, so thoroughly enjoyed it as she’s a very good cook and uses all her own vegetables from her garden. She puts me to shame as I’ve been neglecting my culinary skills since John died. Anyway had a good blether about politics and the financial news, both here and in America., local news, exchanged books, talked about families and so on..........

Banderras and Lucy
Sunday,5th October.
Another Gorgeous Autumn Day
Up pretty early, so I’d plenty time to get ready for Church. Some good rousing hymns. The view across the Forth from where I sit in the choir was very clear today and just beautiful. It added to my enjoyment of the service.
"I to the hills will lift mine eyes, from whence doth come mine aid” (old Scottish Psalm tune)
Sandra gave me a lift home and when i was hanging up my jacket i was surprised ehen a handsome and white cat came running in followed by Lucy. Realised it was Banderrasa and Sandra sometimes looks after him. Lucy was as surprised as I was and the poor thing scuttled under the bend. Tried to get him out but scared. Managed to shut Lucy in the back porch then phoned Sandra. We think that Banderras had seen the car and thought Sandra was here.
After lunch sat and absorbed the Times. Of course full of Mandelson’s return. “There may be trouble ahead.” as the song goes. Hopefully, it will be for the Tories!
Later walked along to see Nettie, then Dick and Joyce. Caught up with all the news at Nettie’s.A friend had given her loads of apples and she was busy stewing them to put in the freezer. She usually makes apple jelly, but It’s a lot of work so she's sticking, with making apple crumble and apple tarts for her contribution to the Christmas Fayre.
Joyce and Dick weren’t in.I’ll catch them tomorrow. Joyce was very excited about her son Alex’s 40th birthday and I know she wants to show me some photographs.
Well that’s the end for poor Tess. Hope the next classic on Telly is a bit more cheerful.

Kirk Wynd
Friday, 3rd October
Kay phoned last night to ask me to look at Robert’s class blog about their trip round the village and also news about Douglas’s camp. It was lovely to see what they’ve been doing and I left a comment for them. Stuart took me shopping as Arthur still not well. He’s worried, as the band has a gig on Saturday for a 50th birthday party.
The junior in Sharon’s gave me a few tips about my new mobile and took some photos with it.We had a good laugh.I’ll get the hang of it somehow!
Bobby phoned on his way home from work.Says he’s getting on fine and still doing the taxis at the weekend.
Margo phoned. The bairns are going to see “Mary Poppins” with the Aunties on Saturday. Mary booked the tickets a year ago! Went to choir practice and enjoyed it.Don’t think anyone noticed my slip up last Sunday.
Glad Gordon Brown is getting organised. What about Peter Mandelson though?
Watched the rest of Corrie which I’d taped. Don’t know what Tony’s up to. I’ll save “The Tudors” for later.
Thursday, 2nd October.
Chris came down and we went to the Aroma for lunch. Parked the car in Kirk Street and went down Kirk Wynd. Haven’t been down that way for ages as I’m usually in a car, but I was reminded of when John used to be waiting there for me when I came out of choir practice.Early on in our relationship, it was that time when I wasn't sure if he was really interested or not, and it always gave me such a lift when I saw him. Still had that lift now and again all through our married life, despite the ups and downs of day to day routines getting in the way sometimes.
I think the tower used to be the lab for Mellis’s soap works. Must check it out in “Prestonpans and Vicinity,” I had lentil soup in the Aroma and Chris had tomato and basil then we had a cup of tea and a scrumptious cake. When I go to hers next we’re going to go to the cafe inside the co-op in Tranent. She is looking forward to her Golden Wedding party and was asking me again if I would sing, so I said I would.Jim is going to give me a practice next time I'm up.
Late I was at the Small World with Sandra and spent over £27!
Margo phoned later to tell me Ailie passed her dancing exam and was presented with a medal and a plaque! We’re really surprised that she’s still going, but pleased at the same time as she used to be embarrassed at doing anything in public. and this will give her more confidence.

Pretty flowers
Monday 1st October
"O suns and skies and clouds of June,
And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October's bright blue weather."
Glad September is past.Hope this verse sums up what the weather forecast in October will be.The trees are still holding their leaves and there are lots of berries on the rowan tree. The old wives' tale is that means it will be a mild winter. The garden still looks pretty colourful too, with the Michaelmas Daisies in particular looking very pretty. It's worrying reading about the decline of the bee population. There used to be lots around even at this time of year, especially on purple or blue flowers.
Decided yesterday to phone the doctor instead of waiting for my appointment next week as the pain was just getting worse and worse. He phoned right back and I’d to go for another blood test, so here’s hoping he gets to the bottom of the trouble soon.Helen is still talking about me going to London and the girls think it would give me something to look forward to, but I’ll see.
Arthur came round to put the brown bin out later and I told him he should have left it as he didn’t look well at all.Was at doctor this morning and given antibiotics.Said the class reunion on Saturday went well and there were about 80 people there.
Rita was along this afternoon and we had a good old moan to one another about all our aches and pains, but had a good laugh too.
Lots of changes in Corrie this week!

School camp
Monday, 29th September.
Lovely morning again, so did a bit of housework first thing, bathroom and kitchen first. Must try to find another cleaner. However,I took my time and managed. Everything is sparkling now! Chris phoned tosay sh'll be down on Thursday Going to go out for a walk, but got pretty cold in afternoon, so locked up early.
Phoned Kay to ask about Douglas setting off for school camp. They had to be at school for nine and the mums were to take their luggage to the village hall. What they hadn’t been told was that the bus was going to Dunbar first and they had to wait for an hour in the freezing cold! Gavin got off to Cannes all right. Lucky him, even though it is work.
Jonathan went to see Macbeth in the Lyceum with Auntie Margaret on Saturday.Enjoyed a good chat with him about it.He thought Lady Macbeth was very good and the battle scene was well done. Margo taking Ailie to her dancing exam tonight. Glad she’s keeping it up.
Fed up seeing David Cameron on telly. He’s such a pompous twit! Wish Labour supporters would be more positive though, instead of taking such a defeatist attitude. Met two strong Labour activists in the Goth on Saturday and they were saying how they miss my brother Geordie just now, as he was a great asset to the local party, always out
caanvassing etc.I was surprised that they were a bit downbeat about Labour’s chances and told them I thought they should be a bit more positive! They thought I sounded just like Geordie!
Sunday, 28th September
When we left the Goth last night.we had to leave through the bar, as they close the side entrance to prevent youngsters running in. The Preston Lodge FP rugby team were there, looking very smart and made way for us to get through. It was almost as if they were giving us a Guard of Honour. We knew some of them, so I said, “Don’t tell your mums you saw us in the bar at the Goth!”
Years ago of course it had a terrible reputation, yet before it went downhill it was an asset to the Pans, just as it is now and all the teachers used to go there for lunch. It was also popular for weddings etc..Jean and Jimmy had their wedding there.
Was up at 6am this morning and felt a chiil in the air. so got up, filled hot water bottle and snuggled down again, for a wee while. Got up when I heard the paper come, so put heating on while I got dressed. Must set the timer so it goes on and off, morning, and night. I feel the cold quite badly now. Listened to Radio Scotland while having breakfast, as there’s a good programme from seven till eight playing a good mixture of music.Later I switched to radio two, then in afternoon I like radio4 Sun coming out, so it looks like another nice day.
Singing the anthem in church, I was mortified when I turned over two pages at once and had to stop singing till I found the place again. Normally I know most of the anthems by heart, but I was a bit unsure on this one so was relying on sight reading to keep me right. Don’t think anyone noticed, mind you, but it dented my confidence a bit, as that’s the first time that’s happened. Maybe I should think about bowing out gracefully!
A relaxing afternoon, reading the papers thoroughly and listening to the radio. Margo phoned. Taking Keir bowling with some of his friends for his birthday treat.
Enjoyed Tess,but soooooooo sad.

Stephen
Saturday, 27th September
Enjoying this Indian Summer and feel a bit better.Stephen phoned about 9.30 looking for his Mum and Dad.I was so pleased he had passed his driving test. He says he’ll be another chauffeur for me and is giving me a lift tonight if I’m going out.Later he came along with Catherine and Arthur bringing my new mobile.Arthur had put in the Sim card, so it’s ready to use. It’s the same as the last one, but a bit more complicated.I don’t think I’ll be using email, internet, camera and so on.
Margo phoned, then Bobby.Going to cemetery to tidy up John’s grave.Told him to leave the geraniums and French marigolds just now, as they’re still blooming beautifully.House phone rang and it was Robert telling me they’re coming for lunch.Lovely to see them and of course Douglas was showing me how to work the phone. He took a photo of Lucy sitting at the table with us but then found a tiny mouse in the garden, quite traumatised, because Lucy had been playing with it. Kay picked it up and they put it in a sheltered spot.It would have been kinder to put it out of its misery, but neither Kay or I were capable of doing it. Robert was telling me about packing Douglas’s bag for the school camp. They really cheered me up.I really do feel blessed with them all.
Phoned Jean, as we had arranged to go to the Old Aberlady Inn, but we both feel we’d rather stay closer to home tonight,so we’re going to the Goth again. The meal was lovely there last time! Just back from Goth and we really enjoyed it, so that will do us for nights out for a week or two.
Friday,26th September
Yesterday another beautiful morning,so sat out in the garden most of the time.Thinking about John of course but mostly remembering all our happy years and counting my blessings. Bobby phoned, then Arthur. Margo came later to take me to the cemetery. She’d brought lovely flowers and we shed some tears but went along to the afternoon tea in the hall afterwards.Of course everyone was pleased to see her, as it’s mostly the golden oldies who go and she enjoyed the lovely home baking! Kay had phoned when we were out.Phoned back but she was out. Went to choir to practise the anthem for Sunday as it’s Harvest. It’s also shoebox time, but I’m just giving a donation this year.Kay had phoned again, but it was a bit late to phone back. I’ll speak to her tomorrow.Just saying cheerio when Louise came along.Felt really sorry for her, as her aunt whom she was very close to had just died and she was telling me her mum was moving away to live in Lanzarote permanently. However, she has lots of good friends and enjoys her job at PL.She’d brought me a lovely embroidered bookmark from the Katherine Mansfield centre in New Zealand and we had a good blether about fomner colleagues at Ross High and the English Syllabus this year.
Today, not feeling very great again, but got dressed, put the slap on as they say nowadays and did shopping etc.Relaxed in hairdresser with cup of tea.I find having my hair done quite therapeutic. Maybe I should try Indian head massage or something.
Watched Corrie. The cat's among the pigeons now all right!

Robin and Bluetit
Wednesday, 24th September
Keir is ten today, Can't believe he's into double figures already. Remember how I found out he was on the way.Walking round the garden with Jonathan and Ailie, Jonathan said,"Mummy's got a baby in her tummy!"The funny thing was Margo was taking a video and we get a good laugh when we look at it again.
What a lovely picture this morning when I was in the garden.A robin and a bluetit playing together in the bird bath! Crept in to get my camera, but couldn’t get close enough to snap them. Must learn how to do close ups.
Well that’s the Sunday Times Literary Quiz finished for another year. We managed to answer them all, though there are two we’re not entirely happy with but Rae’s sister is going to post it off today. Then we’ll only have to wait till the lorry arrives with the ten thousand pounds worth of books!
Helen came this afternoon, so we caught up with all the news as she’s been away at Blairgowrie again. She’s going to London with Al in October and asked me if I’d like to go with them, but the way I’m feeling at the moment I don’t think I could manage.Anyway,“The Spirit is willing, but the Flesh is Weak.” We had a look at Ailie’s video and exchanged family news. Still can’t get used to seeing Helen with her white hair and wish I could lose as much weight as she has! The fat all seems to have settled in my nether regions with the result that it sticks out like a shelf!
”Oh that this too solid flesh should melt!”(I seem to be full of quotes tonight)
Finished “A Walk in the Woods” Loads of information in it.I didn’t know that many of the flowers and plants we have were brought over from America.I knew botanists went to all different countries, but didn’t realise America was one of them. I thought it was the other way round and we sent them over there. So much for the English Country Garden!

Library and shopping
Tuesday, 23rd September.
Another gorgeous morning.Woke up about four a.m. again, read for a wee while, but decided to get up and check the last two answers for Helen. Lovely smell when I answered door for postman. Not the grass this time, but the delicious smell of baking from Ford’s!
Just ready to go out when Kay arrived. It was lovely to see her and she looked so bonnie. She’d been having her hair cut and it really suited her. We had a cup of tea and talked about her job of course. Sounds just right for her. She took me to library, then I did some shopping. Got another Bill Bryson book and ordered the one about Shakespeare.Erica’s going to copy the school Mag 1974. Her picture’s in it of course of course among the prefects with Bobby!
Met Margaret, my ex home help in store, so she gave me a lift home. Practised printing cards again on scrap paper. Can’t seem to get the inside message in proper place, but I'll try again tomorrow.
Tidied out cupboard in study and got all the photo discs together in a box. Gradually getting organised for the painter coming, though I think I’ll wait till after the October hols.I’ll get Stuart to help me sort out books on top shelf. Must get rid of the Spanish novels.Wonder if anyone in the Pans could read them? I’ll probably put them in Church sale -Free to a Good Home!
Margo phoned when she came home from school, then I phoned Arthur about recycling boxes, but he says there’s a strike on tomorrow.
As I’m typing this, Lucy is sitting right next to the keyboard watching me, She’s so funny. When I was preparing my meal she did the same, watching me all the time, now and again rubbing her head against my arm. Cupboard love of course!

Sitting in the Sunshine
Monday, 22nd September
What a glorious morning.Sunny and peaceful and it continued all day! Up early to make the most of it and prepared some food for the birds.Still wearing my dressing gown took my cup of tea and sat in our seat beside the hut.First visitor was a robin alighting on the apple tree, followed by two blackbirds, then some sparrows pecking on the ground.I could have sat there all morning!
However, things to do, people to see, washing to do and hang out in the sunshine!I love the fresh smell of the clothes when they’ve been dried outdoors, though I also love my tumbler drier when it’s raining! Jim the gardener arrived to cut the grass, so had to hang the clothes out later.Lovely smell of newly cut grass now.I’m getting fair poetic here, better move on.
Wrote some letters, then started printing some of John’s cards to sell at the Church for Christmas.I remember he was so proud when I first did that and they’ve always proved very popular, many people buying them to put the paintings in wee frames. Spoiled one or two at first, but soon got the hang of it.
Arthur phoned on lunch break for a wee chat, then Margo phoned later.I realised I’d forgotten to give Keir his birthday when they were down, but she said she’ll be coming before that anyway.
Later walked along the back road to Dick and Joyce's and Nettie's.Coming back later heard some young voices and stopped to watch Preston Lodge doing rugby training over the home. They seemed to be really enjoying it, though I was reading in the paper that there were concerns about the injuries that can be caused by playing rugby.I suppose there are risks in any sport.
Jean phoned when I came back, then Ray’s sister, Helen about the Quiz. Maybe it's because I'm a bit tired, but I’m getting a bit fed up with it now and really think we should just stick with the answers we have. After all we’re not really fussy about winning anyway. What would we do with ten thousand pounds worth of books at our age? Anyway, I said I would double check two of them tomorrow.Neither Rae or Helen have computers, so what we do first is try to find the answers through our general knowledge, then look through the relevant books we have, or can get from the library, then a week before it’s to be sent away,I look on the internet.Next year I think I’ll cheat a bit and just go on the internet right away! I’d better stop grumbling!
Anyway dumbed down a bit watching Corrie while getting on with my knitting then prepared for bed.

Peacocks and butterflies
Sunday 21st September
Not a good day yesterday, health wise, but feeling much better this morning, so decided to make the effort and go to church. Haven’t been for ages, what with being away, having visitors, not feeling well etc. Felt better afterwards both physically and emotionally, Think maybe I've been feeling the way I do, is partly because it will soon be the anniversary of John’s death.Thought of him when saw a few Peacock butterflies in garden this morning and two Red Admirals.
Felt even better when Margo and the bairns arrived.Sitting in the back porch, reading the paper, when Jonathan came in from the front door. I hadn’t unlocked the back gate and Margo thought I wasn’t home yet.Jonathan seems to get taller every week and it's great being able to talk about school at his level. In geography his class is studying coal mining at the moment and they may be doing field trips,so hope thay come down this way.Keir was showing me the notes he's keeping for the Nature watch in the Scotsman.
Ailie was very excited,as she’s been asked to be a bridesmaid at her cousin William’s wedding next year-IN Canada! I was telling her it’s an honour to be asked, but of course Margo said John is worrying about the cost,as they’re all going to another wedding a month later when John is to be best man! There will be a big tightening of belts in the Falconer household from now on I’m sure. Just finished watching Tess. Perhaps knowing what lies ahead of her just seems to make me pity her even more somehow.I know it's just a story!

Bonnie Laddie, Highland Laddie
Friday, 19th September
Phoned doctor and he phoned back with some advice about medication, but feel a bit better ths morning anyway. Went shopping. Met lots of people I hadn’t seen for ages. Just when Arthur was arriving to pick me up I saw a handsome Highlander striding across the car park and along the street! Next a Redcoated person with his wig in his hand got out of the car and went into the store. Of course, it’s the Battle weekend! Just getting into the car when he came out again. If he hadn’t moved so quickly I would have started singing “Hey Johnnie Cope” to him. We were steeped in the Jacobite story when I was at school. I think they still do themed lessons at the Primary. I wonder if they do many songs, I’ve been humming them all afternoon.. Noticed “The Battle of Pots and Pans” is on again. It was excellent when I saw it last. I believethey did a performance at the Fringe
I’ve been taking it easy this afternoon. Never usually watch telly in the daytime, but when a friend asked me if I’d any videos of Thomas Hardy, I looked out the one of “Far from the Madding Crowd” that I’d taped years ago, and of course started watching it. Can’t seem to get enough of Hardy these days, though for a change, I’ve started reading Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods”. It was one of the ones I got in Blairgowrie.
Margo phoned this morning. Ailie is much happier as she’s had her Maths class changed. The Aunties are taking them all out for a meal tomorrow night to celebrate John’s fiftieth, so Margo’s coming on Sunday. I think Kay miay be coming to see the re-enactment tomorrow.Bobby home tonight.
Had a nice visit from Stephen. Asking him if he would be affected with all these problems with HBOS, RBS etc, but he says he’s OK, but very busy. Can’t believe, he will be thirty on his next birthday. I remember how proud we all were when he was born. The twins were sixteen, and they were besotted and always wanting to babysit which was a great help to Catherine and Arthur. He came earlier with my tea and watched Corrie with me.Teased me when I got a bit carried away, saying “Mum, it’s only a soap, it’s not real” and we both had a right giggle.
Rae’s sister phoned about Times Quiz. We’re doing fine, but checking our answers and verifying some of them.
Whaur hae ye been a' the day?

My Big Brother's Birthday
Friday morning, 19th September
Gremlins at my blog now as lost Wednesday's draft.Wasn't saved automatically. Full of moans anyway about me not feeling well.Maybe it's the gremlins at me too! Feel a bit better this morning.
Thursday, 18th September
Billy’s birthday today. It’s always so sad seeing him in the home, but I must say he seems very well looked after. It was lovely when he gave us a big beaming smile of recognition this time and even though he can’t talk, he chortled at the photos of us all when we were bairns and munched away at his sweeties. It’s a pity all his family live so far away,
Upholsterer arrived to discuss having my suite re-covered, so he’s left me some samples to have a look at, but still not feeling too good, so I’ll look at them later.Wish I’d phoned doctor, but had a rest in afternoon and felt better.
Arthur came just when I was having my meal so that cheered me up.. He had a good laugh reading his school magazine, with all the 6th year’s signatures on the back. Going to take it to the reunion. Don’t know why they’re having one, as most of them have never moved away from the Pans!
He was just away when Karen next door came over with Yvonne for a blether. They’re going away down south to a wedding tomorrow, so wanted to let me know. It’s lovely to have young people next door. Watched a bit of telly, but nothing much on, so going to bed early with Thomas Hardy!

September in the Rain
Tuesday, 16th September.
Pretty miserable weather today, but pleasant surprise when I went to pull the curtains in John’s room. The clematis just outside the window is full lof buds.I thought it was dead, as it hasn’t flowered for ages, so it quite lifted my spirits. I think it’s a message from John actually, as he always liked the different view of the garden from his window, especially in the latter stages of his illness. As I look out when I’m typing this, I see a faint glimpse of sun, so I may manage a wee walk later on.
“The best laid schemes o’ mice and men gang aft agley” as Rabbie Burns said. When I was tidying the front room( trying to do too many things at once as usual) my toe caught on the lamp cable, the base crashed into pieces, the bulb shattering all over the place. Picked up as much as I could and put it into a bag, went to get hoover, forgot the tube was choked and I couldn’t clear it. Had a wee seat and a coffee to calm myself down and read some of the poems from the book I’d bought at Blairgowrie. Luckily Helen came in, swept up the smaller fragments, cleared the hoover and changed the lamps over, then we had lunch. Great to have a wee sister.
After she’d left, started trying to organise the book shelves, but I should have known better! When I lifted the folders off the bottom shelf everything fell out all over the place. However, it made it easier to reorganise and that’s what I’d been intending to do anyway. Going to put stuff I rarely need on bottom shelf. Did a wee bit, then Jean phoned to tell me the eye hospital had been in touch and she’s to go on Thursday to discuss her tests. Sounded a bit apprehensive, so asked her round a wee while. Glad her daughter is back from holiday in America and is going with her.
Lilian popped in then and I gave her some apples. They’re not very good this year, very small. We talked about the soldier killed in Iraq last week. i know It happens all the time, but it really brings it home, when It’s someone whose family you know. His Granny and Grandpa both come from the Pans and I remember his mum as a young girl.Thank goodness Craig didn’t stay in the airforce!
Glad Ian Gray won the leadership contest.Let’s hope he can make a difference to the present state of the Labour party.

The Gentle Maiden
Monday, 15th September.
Well,”Tess” lived up to my expectations last night and I just wallowed in it. Thought the girl, playing her was excellent..The melody in the opening scene with the girls dancing was familiar, then I remembered it was “The Gentle Maiden”, an old Irish folk song.John liked me singing it.Chris came for lunch. She’d watched “Tess” too and enjoyed it and she remembered the melody too.Jim overheard it while he was practising, and started playing it again
“The Gentle Maiden” .
There's one that is pure as an angel, and fair as the flowers in May.
They call her the gentle maiden, wherever she takes her way.
Her eyes have the glance of sunlight, as it brightens the blue seaway,
And more than the deep-sea treasure, the love of her heart I pray.
Though far and apart from my darling, I dream of her everywhere.
The sound of her voice is about me, the spell of her presence there,
And whether my prayers be granted, or whether she pass me by,
The face of that gentle maiden will follow me till I die.
They were at Braemar at the weekend, so we were comparing notes about our respective visits to places with royal associations! Had a laugh. She was saying she’d like me to sing at her Golden Wedding party if I can. I know everyone who’s going, so I should be all right and I’m sure John would have wanted me to, Chris and Jim have been our dear friends for so many years. We watched a video of Ailie doing her Highland dancing, and one of the men in it plays in Jim’s band too.
Pleased about Ailie, as she’s a bit shy and it’ll give her confidence. Don’t know how long she’ll stick it though. If she does, it’ll cost Margo a fortune! She phoned later to tell me that her sister-in- law Margaret, who teaches History, wants to take Jonathan to the Lyceum to see “Macbeth”.I’m glad because I see it got a very good crit and he studied it last term.
Arthur came along and joined me having my tea, He enjoyed playing at the wedding on Saturday and is looking forward to the other gigs with the band he has lined up. He and Catherine are going to a school reunion next week (with all the other 50 year olds), so that should be fun! Must look out the class photo for him. He’s going to get me a new phone tomorrow. Watched “Corrie” then New Tricks, but nothing compares with Hardy (well maybe Jane Austen!)

Blairgowrie
Saturday, 4th September.
Well, where do I begin? Last Saturday was the church Autumn Fair, which went well, despite having to be held indoors. Kay came afterwards with Robert, when I’d just started emptying the fridge to give it a good clean.”I’ll do it” granny he piped up and he did too, taking the food out, then the shelves, washing the inside and Kay did the rest.I told him he’s my new home help!
Gremlins lurking in the house, I think as computer and mobile both died on me! Planning my trip to Blairgowrie with Helen and Al, so needed mobile to communicate with them in the the caravan. They booked me into a B and B as they think It will be more comfortable for me, which is true as my days of roughing it are over. Arthur came to have a look at computer, but says Bobby’s the expert, so he came later.Busy with taxis, so told him just to leave it, as I was going away anyway. Helen said I could use Al’s phone. Bobby sorting everything out when I’m away, before he goes on a course for his new job.
Off to Blairgowrie on Sunday morning. Went to B and B first to put in case etc.It had been a former mill owner’s house, so very traditional, just my style and the owners very friendly. Really lovely. downstairs bedroom with ensuite. It was set up on a wee hill opposite the caravan site.Helen had cooked our meal at home, so we had it in the caravan, then lazed about reading all the Sunday papers.I felt totally spoiled by Helen and Al.I’d asked Jonathan to tape the programme about Thomas Hardy, but we watched it anyway and thoroughly enjoyed it Beautifully filmed, bringing out Hardy’s love of Nature as well as discussing his work. Monday, went into Blairgowrie. Bought a couple of tops and browsed round the bookshop. Classics reduced, so got “Hard Times” for £1 as it’s one I haven’t read. Al was in Barnardos looking for books and got three for a pound, two for me.One was “Countryside Poems” which had some of Thomas Hardy’s in it.
Off to Glamis Castle in afternoon. Always visualised it as a ruin. Saw room where Duncan was supposed to have been murdered, which was in the ruined part, but found the rest of the castle very impressive. Couldn’t do the full tour, as too many stairs, but drank in the history of it, though I always have that wee niggle at the back of my mind in these places about the big divide between rich and poor.Had lunch in visitor’s centre and a stroll round grounds. Al went for an Indian “cairry oot’ when we got back. I’ve never had an Indian meal before, so I got scampi and chips, but Helen gave me some of hers and I enjoyed it.
Tuesday back to town for short time then off to “Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre” near Stonehaven.I've always admired his work and met people there who do too - a couple from America and a German family. His books have even been translated into Chinese The opposite of the inhabitants of Glamis in the political leanings -almost Communist in fact. Tragic that he died so young. Dunnotar Castle is a ruin but its position on the edge of the cliff makes it quite spectacular!
I think this blog is getting a bit boring, rattling on about literature.I may be getting a bit nostalgic about my university days. I did things in such a rush there, that I didn’t have time to really enjoy the course. Saying that, I was lucky to get through it in the first place at my age and without John backing me, humouring me and listening to me, I couldn’t have done it at all!
Thought about him a lot especially in the B and B, as he always loved the full breakfast when we were on holiday, as we usually just had porridge and toast at home, though I sometimes made him a fry up on a Saturday. Would be considered unhealthy nowadays!
Went through Perth on way home, where we spent a week once. It was festooned with flowers. I think it usually wins a prize in the Britain in Bloom thing -or maybe it’s the Scotland in Bloom. Good to see some wildlife gardens there too. Had a meal there and home in evening. Margo down for band practice, so good to see her and gave her all my news and the pressies for the bairns. Liked the pink top I’d bought. Do for Chris and Jim’s Golden wedding.Bobby had sorted the computer so got my mail etc.
Thursday, tidied up, then went to Jean’s. Discussed where we’re going for our tea this weekend. The Goth I think, as it was good the last time. Usual Friday shopping etc. Went to Dick’s for lunch. Joyce wanted to hear about the caravan etc. Nice visit from Isabel Aitken. Was going to choir, but Sandra phoned to say there was no practice, so quite glad. Caught up with Corrie. Surprise, surprise, things are looking up when they’re quoting 17th century poetry on it!
Saturday, delicious meal at Goth again and talked about everything. Margo stayed overnight and helped me change bed etc. Went to John’s grave with flowers.A beautiful day.I always feel the irony of it, him not being here to enjoy the sunshine with me. Bobby here a wee while. He’s off again tonight on his course and next week too. Arthur phoned. asking if I wanted to come for tea, but I’ve already prepared something. Looking forward to Tess tonight, though I know it’ll be so sad. It’s been a feast of literature for me the past two or three days!

Visiting and Visitors
Wednesday, 3rd September.
3rd September1939 “The Day War Broke Out”. was the name of a monologue someone used to do on the radio.(Rob Wilton)I think. Very funny for such a serious subject, but all those things kept up morale.Loads of washing, as I’ve been letting it mount up. Glad I did,as managed to get all the towels hung out before the rain came on. I’m hardly using the tumble tryer at all now. Think I'm getting a halo! Doctor phoned to discuss medication. Wants to see me next week.
Rita here in afternoon as usual. Delighted to hear Alex got the report from the hospital saying he’s able to drive again. Stuart came round to put out recycling boxes. Lovely to see him and hear all his news. He’s working at Musselburgh Grammar at the moment. Phoned Margo, as I know she’s going out to the Churchill theatre with Aile to see an amateur production of a musical called Romeo and Juliet” Aile is very excited and getting all dolled up!
I’m looking forward to “Lost in Austen” tonight!
Tuesday, 2nd September.
Sunshine all day again. Visited Isobel at South View. Find turn of brae at top very difficult now (oh these old bones!),but tried different route which was a bit better. It’s funny, even though the roads are paralell, one is steeper at one point than the other. Fine coming down.though.Met quite a few folk I hadn’t seen for ages.
Good blether with Isabel. Lovely Pictures of her daughter’s wedding down South. Also photos of other daughter’s house in France, an old barn, converted. Fascinating looking at pictures of original, then the work in progress. Remembered when John and I were in France about twenty years ago, we thought about buying a holiday home in Brittany. Wish we had now.The whole family could have benefited. Isobel is going there in October. Her daughters are twins like mine. Same age too.
Back home, got shredder out to sort out my filing, Couldn’t bring myself to shred our old letters yet though. Wee salad for tea. Lilian came down later as I’d phoned to ask how Ian was after his op.Arthur came when she was going out.Made me a cup of tea.Telling me about all the people who were at the birthday party on Saturday in the Goth. Good time was had by all by the sound of it! Watched River City later.Honestly I think it’s the best soap on the box at the moment and the episode last night was a cracker.

Greeen Green Grass of Home
Monday, 1st September.
Sunny September morning, but it didn’t last long. Just when Kathleen arrived to pick me up,the rain was pouring down. Enjoyed lunch at Longniddry Inn, though it’s becoming a bit shabby. It’s just been taken over, so hopefully it‘ll improve soon. Food was good though and the company of course. Discussed schools, past and present, books we’ve been reading, Times Quiz, American and British politics, local and national news and most importantly our families, especially our grandchildren.
Sun had came back by the time I came home, so watered and deadheaded my pot plants and sat up the back garden in “Betty’s Bower” that John made for me.Feel very close to him there.Kay phoned.Started her new job as PA to Sir Timothy Clifford, so was telling me all about it. Sounds really interesting and more suited to her talents than the last job she had, plus the hours are more flexible. Margo phoned just after her. Ailie came home with a certificate from her History teacher for being the best at designing a poster about the history of the 20th Century. Glad she's settling down fine at
secondary school.
Something wrong with my email.Receive messages, but can’t send them. One of the boys will look at it later.Bobby phoned.Going to call in on his way home tomorrow to look at it.
Sunday 31st August
Raining heavily, but makes the grass greener Don’t think it will grow so quickly now. At church in morning, then at Sandra’s, as she had an open house day for neighbours and some friends from school. Good laughs and lovely food.Choir started again on Friday. Thought about giving up when we finished up for the summer, but changed my mind.I’ll maybe change back again if it’s a severe winter! Anyway, doing some more demanding pieces. More of a challenge.Out with Jean for tea again on Saturday. We’ve decided to do this on a regular basis, maybe once a month.Doing fine with Times Literary Quiz, but meeting friends from school tomorrow, so I’ll take it with me.

Edinburgh Fringe
Wednesday, 27th August
Well, that’s the Edinburgh Festival nearly finished and the Fringe been and gone. Jean and I enjoyed the show at Valvona and Crolla and our meal there afterwards. Didn’t know what to wear to go to the show but Helen gave us a lift, so just took umbrella, instead of raincoat. She wasn’t sure if she could turn into Elm Row, with all the roadworks going on, so cut off at Hillside Crescent and through Montgomery street, taking us practically to the door! Really enjoyed the show. Philip Contini was in good form tellig the story behind the songs and the orchestra was superb, especially the clarinetist. Were trying to remember how many years we had been coming, but couldn’t.. I used to go to it with Sandra and Sheila when I was working and I remember the first time, we were given an oyster ice cream when we came out. It would probably be Di Ciacca’s Ice cream! Had something to eat there and Jean’s daughter and husband were going round art galleries, so they picked us up to take us home. Thank goodness, as pouring again!
Dick’s birthday on Friday. Liked book I gave him about the troops left behind at Dunkirk. Thought he’d like it as our uncle was one of them. He's taking Joyce to Copenhagen for five days next month.
Kay and the boys here on Saturday, bringing cat food, soap powder, etc so that’s me stocked up for a wee while. What a delight the bairns are, chattering away about school, pals etc. Kay told me all about her new job as PA to Sir Timothy Clifford. It sounds as if it was made for her. Bobby called in, giving me lots of laughs about being a taxi driver
Sunday at church for communion. Margo Aiie and Jonathan arrived.Jonathan gave me some answers for Times Literary Quiz - Agatha Christie, H.G Wells, Roald Dahl so that’s a start! No doubt I’ll be getting a call fro Rae’s sister in Glasgow soon to compare answers.
Ailie and Margo helped me change bed as Margaret, my cleaner can’t come any more. She’s looking after her new grandchild as her daughter in law has gone back to work. I’ll miss her.
Helen and I making plans to go to Blairgowrie. Hope the weather holds out. Quite warm today. One or two butterflies floating about, but no peacocks. Doctor phoned about blood test . Says I may have polymyalgia, so he’s sent up a prescription for steroids.! Bit worried about taking them, but just to try them for a week then phone him. Rita here with Grandson’s wedding phtos. Lovely

Peacock butterfly
Saturday, 16th August
Foot a lot better today, so had a leisurely read of the paper and tried crossword, but I’m no use at it without John, just as I’m no use at lots of other things without him. Did some washing and ironing and tidied up a bit. The sun was still shining, so walked along to Nettie’s to return jam jars, as she’s always giving me lots of marmalade and I know she’ll be making some for the church fair. Ended up she insisted I stay and have tea with her - tasty cheese and tomato omelette and some of her delicious home baking! Watched Inspector Lynley Mystery. And so to bed.
Friday,15th August
Margo, John and bairns were coming down so when Dick took me to Port Seton for my blood test at 9 a.m, I thought I’d shop early and see if Sharon could fit me in earlier. It all worked out fine, but I was absolutely starving when I came home, as I had to fast before my blood test. Just finished tea and toast when they arrived and of course Margo was saying I should have waited and she would have done the shopping. Great to see them and they were telling me all about their holiday. John cut the hedge at the back, as Jim didn’t have time to do it and then we had lunch, special request for for pizza and strawberry tarts, so Margo and I went to Ford’s.
We laughed at Keir afterwards, as he swept the floor when we’d finished, and even swept the hall and living room! Made a good job of it too! He takes after his dad, of course, as he’d already washed up and put everything away before Margo and I got the chance, not that we were in much of a rush to do it anyway! Arthur phoned as he’d been looking for me to take me shopping.I forgot to phone him to tell him I was going early. He had a good blether with Margo as they have one or two gigs coming up.
Put my feet up after they’d gone, as ankle still sore, then watched telly all night , Corrie and the Tudors. Must say I find Corrie a bit rubbishy at the moment. Gayle doing her simpering act, the Steve and Michelle saga going on and on and the new characters Aunty Pam and Teresa being pains in the neck.
Thursday, 14th August
Saw peacock butterfly at last and the rain stopped long enough to allow Jim the gardener to cut the grass, so things are looking up!. The herbaceous border at the front is a bit lush, but still it’s very colourful.Went along to Dick’s to borrow some milk, as mine had gone sour and met Catherine’s mum in her wheelchair with her carer, Dolly, so asked them to come to mine for a cuppa. Dolly seems really kind as she takes Nan out a lot as well as helping with her personal care. Went a walk in afternoon to try out new sandals, but kept waking up during the night as one of my ankles was very painful. Think I’ll have to adjust the sandals a bit.
Not So Glorious Twelfth
Tuesday, 12th August
The Glorious Twelfth. Not very glorious for the birds though. I’ve always thought it’s such a cruel sport, just like all the other “sports’ devised by the rich for their own amusement.
Was at shops in morning, then took Jean’s book back"No Place like Home" by Mary Higgins Clark. Started reading one of Kay’s "Bel Canto"by Ann Patchett. Promised myself I’ll go back to “The Bronze Horseman” at the weekend. On way back passed Sandra’s.She was coming out looking for Vincent, so asked me in for a wee blether. She was making cucumber soup. I used to make it years ago. Also lettuce. If I can find the recipes I may try to make them again. Just the thing to do on rainy days like this. Sandra gave me some tomatoes from the greenhouse and the Geo Bars I’d asked her to get me from the Small World.I’ve already eaten two!
PC from Margo. They’re coming home today. She phoned later. They all had a great tIme, so I’ll hear about it later. Jonathan passed his exam. He doesn’t do Standard Grades till next year, but his Maths teacher presented some of his class a year early, so he was delighted with his result.
Arthur phoned, then Kay.Stuart came along to put out re-cycling boxes. He and Lisa went to Bulgaria for a week. He said they really enjoyed it and it’s a beautiful place, but they felt really sorry for the people, as they were very poor. Watched a lot of rubbish on TV, but managed to knit half of a baby hat at the same time.

Rhythm of the rain
Monday 11th August
Started off sunny this morning but I thought the roof of the conservatory was going to fall in with the incessant drumming of the rain. I’d hung some washing out too, but brought it in between showers. Here’s me trying to be good too and not use the tumble dryer but a quick tumble was all they needed, then I put them on the arms of the chairs in the conservatory so they’ll soon dry off. Rita came along in afternoon as she can’t manage on Wednesday. She’s going to Craig and Linda’s wedding party on Saturday. It’s in fancy dress, but she’s not dressing up!
On Saturday, heavy rain.Arthur came along to have breakfast with me as Hhe didn’t manage on Friday.Jean and I decided to go to the Goth in the evening for a meal and I must say we were impressed. It’s a long time since we’ve been there and I remembered it was ok then, but this time the meal was as good as we’ve had anywhere and very well presented. Next time we go out it will be to the concert at Valvona and Crolla’s, which we go to every year at the Festival. Helen offered to take us, but then said she wouldn’t get right to the door anyway because of the upheaval with the trams.Anyway, we’ll be all right taking the bus to London Road. It’s not far to walk down.
Yesterday, Kay came with the boys and we went to Merryhatton. They love that. Robert was desperate. to buy me something, as his holiday money was burning a hole in his pocket. He finally decided on a big bar of chocolate. I think he was hoping he would get a piece for himself. Haven’t heard from Margo since Friday. I thought they would have been home by now. I bought a baby card for Helen’s niece Susan’s first baby - Seamus Dunnett and some pretty napkins and of course we had lunch. then off to Kay’s and got a load of books.

The Flood
Thursday, 7th August
Can’t believe the rain’s actually stopped! Rory just sent me a copy of Britten’s Noye’s Fludde and I was beginning to think it was prophetic! I’d visions of the Pans being swept into the Forth and out to the North Sea.! I believe the bypass is closed at some point and there’s flooding opppsite the Royal Musselburgh and at Sam Burns. I hope the people in the new houses are OK. There was always flooding there, but the pits used to pump it away (don’t know how but they did)
I haven’t been feeling too great lately, so had some blood tests done, but I’ve to have some more. Don’t suppose it’s anything much, but better check anyway. Really should have been doing my blog, but didn’t seem to have the energy for anything. Hoping to go for a meal with Jean at the weekend. Chris was here on Tuesday and her family are away back to Dubai. Her arm is healing up fine and she’s driving again, so she took me to doctor’s and for some shopping. Louise will be back from New Zealand now. I had a postcard the other day with three muscular Maoris sticking their tongues at me!
Really enjoyed watching Rita's grandson's wedding from Las Vegas. What a laugh we had, as we thought it wasn't coming on so Rita put her coat on and Alex and Janice were waiting in the car when it started so they hurried back in. Craig and his dad were wearing kilts and Linda was lovely.
One thing I have been doing, is thinning out my wardrobe and filing bills etc. Tried to throw out books, but as usual, put them back. Still reading “The Bronze Horseman”, but I leave it for a while and then go back. The other books I’ve been reading are “One Good Turn” by Kate Atkinson, which I really enjoyed as it was set in Edinburgh. There was a programme on BBC 4 about Laurie Lee, so I looked out “Cider with Rosie” to read again and “As I went out some Midsummer Morning”, which I haven’t read before.
Well, the Olympics start tomorrow, but I’m afraid I’m not that interested, especially when I read about the people who’ve been forcibly removed from their homes to build the stadium, plus the treatment of Tibet. I admire the young fellow from Edinburgh, who helped to put up the protest banner!

Lovely morning again. Saw another two butterflies, but should be more of them by this time. Helen back from Blairgowrie. Didn’t recognise her at first, her hair is so different, but suits her. Makes her look younger. Pretty sore this morning but better as the day went on. Rita here in afternoon. Still quite worried about Alex.Phone call from Elsa last night. Talked for ages comparing books we are reading. Told me about good programme on radio 4. Must try to catch it next time. Reading “The Bronze Horseman”.Really good. Sheila recommended it. Margo came in on way to band practice. Helped me to sort out webcam for a friend to watch her grandson’s wedding in Las Vegas on Friday. Arthur was teasing me last night about his new Mac. Says I’ll want one like it when I see it.Told him there’s a lot I still don’t understand about my own one!

John's birthday
Tuesday, 29th July.
Where do I begin? Coming to the end of July and I’ve really been neglecting my blog. Hope I can remember what I’ve been doing. Main thig of course it was John’s birthday, so he has been even more in my thoughts.
Helen Williams and her wee boy, Simon, arrived to show me the family tree. she has been researching. She had already sent me information about Thomas Scott Dickson ( my Granny’s brother) who was Labour MP for Lanark from 1931 to ?. From what I read about him, I think the Labour party is in dire need of his like today. He was a true socialist!
What a fiasco last week and where is it all going to end? They’ll need to do something drastic to get things back on an even keel, but I don’t think getting rid of Gordon’s the answer. Anyway, I spent a very pleasant afternoon with Helen and Simon. She’d going to bring me a full copy of her research when she finalises it . She is a researcher at the National Library, so she has access to lots of things. What she’s been working on recently is “500 YEARS OF PRINTING IN SCOTLAND.” Must try to go to one of the exhibitions.
My niece Karin came on the Thursday to see the family lawyer about her dad’s affairs as he is now on a nursing home. It’s so sad as Katharina looked after him so well, then she died. Both the boys home from holidays. Catherine wasn’t surprised about Simba but in a way glad she wasn’t here when it happened.
Chris came down. Her family are here from Dubai, so she has been very busy, but they were out for the day, so we caught up with all the news. She drove down, as her arm is ok now, though she says it gets tired at night..
Afternoon tea in the church hall one afternoon, so met up with everyone. Jean and I went to the Dragon Way for a meal on Saturday and really enjoyed it, Very quiet when we went in, but got really busy later on. Loads of people out for a walk in the gloaming. Going to the carvery at the Goth in a fortnight.
Kay and the boys here on Sunday. So excited about going away in their tent again. To Alnwick this time so they’ll be going to Alnwick castle. Last week they were at Scone Palace and loved it. Helen and Al away to Blairgowrie for weekend.
Gardener here today, thank goodness as it was pretty long. It’s looking lovely now though, but I’ll have to think about moving some plants around in the Autumn. Karen, my neighbour and her wee girl Yvonne over for a blether and a cuppa later.Had a good blether with Arthur when hecame out to put out the recycling boxes. Stuart is away with the Youth Club

Ailie's new toy
Sunday, 13th July
At church in morning, then Margo arrived with Jonathan and Ailie. Jonathan is staying for two nights. Ailie had her baby elephant toy with her wearing a Hawaiian outfit. I’m glad she’s still pretty young for her age, even though she goes to secondary school in August. Had lunch, then went to cemetery. Tidied John and Geordie’s graves and filled up vase on Katharina’s. The bedding plants and flowers look lovely, but oh dear, I still miss him so much.

Eyebrows
Saturday 12th July
Had my eyebrows waxed and what a difference! I always seem to wait till they’re really thick, but I’ve made an appointment for next time already. It ll be less painful, I hope! I also had a pedicure. which was very soothing. At Helen’s for lunch, then to Marks at the Fort. Bought some food, lovely roses for John’s grave, but Helen not feeling well, so came home.

Dobbies
Friday, 11th July
Really enjoyed the day at Dobbies with Chris, Ella and Mary. Bought some bits and bobs but no plants, as the garden is overflowing at the moment. Had a nice lunch. then went round the food hall, where I bought a tipsy cake for Jerry’s birthday. Haven’t tasted one for years, but the smell of rum was pretty strong!

Simba
Thursday,10th July
Hairdresser today, as going to Dobbies with Chris on Friday. Green Thumb man arrived to treat grass, so it’s getting a good “water in”.. Gardener going to come on Monday to give it a chance to take effect.
Bit of a trauma at night. Stuart phoned asking to borrow John’s car as Simba, his mum’s cat was ill. and he'd to take it to the emergency vet at King’s Buildings He’d no idea where that was, but Dick gave him directions when he went to borrow his cat box .Poor thing had a clot at the base of the spine, so had to be put down.I "m glad Lisa went with him as he was a bit upset. Catherine and Arthur are due home on Tuesday , so they'll get a bit of a shock, though it was quite old. They'll get a shock with the bill too.!

Aroma
Tuesday, 8th July
Kay and the boys came. Douglas desperate to tell me that a poem he wrote at school is to be published in a book! Helped with watering again, then we went to the Aroma. They loved that of course the slot machine at the shop next door too! They walked along the shore path for a bit. I met them opposite Somerfield”s. The days are past when I liked nothing better than scrambling over the rocks, especially at the Johnnie Moat, jumping into the sea, searching for unusual shells, making patterns with them or taking them to school where we were taught to make necklaces and bracelets with them. The boys fihed for podleys in the rock pools and lit fires in tin cans from debris lying around. Happy days! Nowadays our parents would be charged with neglect and I suppose the beach was much dirtier then than it is now. We’d just got in when Helen came. Asked me if I’d take our niece Karin to stay next week as she has the chance of a lift to London, so going to see Rory

Sunday, 6th July
Didn’t feel very great in church this morning. Was in a bit of a rush before I went. but soon recovered when I got home. Margo and Ailie arrived. Ailie was altering her jeans. She’s very handy with the needle (like Kay). Margo says she was born to the wrong twin! Anyway the end result of her efforts was a pair of shorts with sequins sown round the edges and a pocket with a design on it .(home made).tres chic!
Bobby, Pauline and Craig called in.They’re off to Turkey for two weeks.
Glad Bobby’s managed to get another job. The way things are at the moment, he’s lucky to get one that suits him. He’s enjoying doing the taxis at the weekends though, especially the chat with the customers!

80th birthday
Saturday, 5th July
Bonnie blackbird in the garden, this morning, then the starlings arrived. Don’t know where all the blackbirds are this year. Tidied garden a wee bit, then did some hand washing. but of course the rain came on. Jean round in afternoon.
Thought I’d better look out old photos, family records etc. My second cousin’s daughter, Helen (is that my 3rd cousin?) now lives in Edinburgh and is researching the family tree, so wants to come down for an afternoon to see if I can fill in some blanks. Should be interesting. When I first retired I did a search of John’s mum’s family and traced back quite far. Started doing my side of the family, but found it very time consuming.
Friday, 4th July
Nan really enjoyed her surprise lunch, as did the rest of us. Her face lit up when she saw everyone. The food was lovely and there was a cake, balloons and so on. She is so frail. I don’t know what I moan about when I see her. Wanted me to come in to see Davie on the way home and also to see all the lovely flowers. She was especially proud of the bouquet from Stephen and his girl friend Margo. Went a walk along the back road. Doubt I’ll have to start using a stick!!! Had a blether with Nettie and a cuppa.
Thursday,3rd July
Stephen phoned. He’d been in touch with his dad and mum in Cyprus. Nan doesn’t have a dvd player. Offered to get me something from John Lewis, but I managed to get nice perfume from the chemist. Shopped today instead of Friday, as six of us are taking Nan to the Dragon Way at the Cuthill for lunch for her birthday tomorrow.
Wednesday, 2nd July.
Felt a bit better, but still a bit stiff. Helen came in morning Talking about Bruges again. Quite difficult to get booked. Think there’s a rush as the crossing finishes in September. Stephen came along on his scooter. He’s managed to get it going again. Going to get me a DVD of “Atonement” to give to his granny Nan for her 80th birthday on Friday.

Holidays
Tuesday,1st July
Lovely sunny day. Arthur and Catherine off on holiday to Cyprus. Bobby & Pauline go on Sunday to Turkey. I’ll miss them.
Margo came early with the bairns. They helped me to water front garden, but, like Robert Ailie started soaking Keir and I. Good laugh though. Went to swing park. I told them their mum used to play there too. As a matter of fact, so did I when I was wee - and John! Very different now of course. Had lunch in the Aroma cafe. First time I’ve been there. Very pleasant. Food was delicious Later we walked along the shore, then to joke shop. We wanted strawberry tarts from Ford’s but alas-sold out! Had to make do with something less fancy.
Really enjoyed my day, but feeling pretty sore again, with walking on uneven surfaces.Stuart came along to put out the re-cycling boxes. Made me a cup of tea.

Northfield House
Monday, 30th June, 2008
At Chris and Jim’s for lunch and later Jim asked me if I knew a song he had heard and started playing it. We finished up having a wee singsong and I managed all right. I’m fine singing solo in a small company.
Watched Corrie, then started watching the tennis. Know nothing about the game, but became interested as it was very tense. Finished up it was too tense, so put it off.
Sunday, 29th June, 2008.
At church in morning, then a pleasant afternoon visiting Northfield House with the History Society in the afternoon. The house has much improved since I last visited it, though the gardens were always lovely. The first visit was as a Guide about sixty years ago. when Miss McNeill, the local Guide commissioner lived there and allowed us to take our woodcraft badge in the grounds, then gave us tea on the lawn under the willow tree! We were very impressed, as it was served by the maid wearing her cap and apron! Next time it was an open day by the National Trust and more recently an open doors day, when all the historic buildings in Prestonpans were open to the public.
This time the present owner himself and his girl friend served us a lovely afternoon tea in the dining room complete with home made scones and jam and cream! He was very pleasant showing us rouns the house, telling us a bit of the history of the house and inviting us to stroll around the lovely garden as long as we wished. The herbaceous border is lovely and he gave credit to Jim Foster for giving him lots of advice about the garden.Wish I'd had my camera!
Very sore when I got home as I found the stairs quite difficult, but it was worth it.
Saturday evening 28th June,
Nice surprise visit from Margo on her break from playing at a wedding at the Royal Musselburgh. enjoyed the blether. She looked lovely in a black and white dress. Coming next week with the bairns.

Seton Sands Caravan Park
Saturday, 28th June
Quiet day, but unexpected visitors. My second cousin Janette Millar from Hamilton and her husband. They were checking their caravan at Seton Sands. Had a good chat about old times when the caravan park was just lots of old huts, railway carriages etc and there was always a huge influx of visitors from the West at the "Glasgow Fair" - still is I think. Her husband is a keen gardener. Still grows all his own vegetables. Most I can muster now is some lettuce amomg the roses.Very tasty though.
Took some photos of the garden.
Friday, 27th June
What a pleasant surprise to see John's pal Jimmy Ralph on the Scottish news last night and his photo in the paper today. John would have been so interested in him making the replacement "Whale's Jaws" for Berwick Law. Must phone Pat and ask if I can speak to the TV personality! Also good last week to read about Bill Bailie's M.B.E. for services to music. Very well deserved. Bill is so unassuming.
Usual Friday, shopping etc, but lovely when Kay and the boys arrived. They were very excited as they'd brought part of my birthday present. A big spotted cup and saucer (for a plant) to match the other spotty dishes in the kitchen! They were very serious about telling me how to look after it! Got them to help me water the tubs in the garden.Of course when we used the hose at the front, Robert just couldn't resist spraying all over the place! Great fun!
Choir at night. Last one for the summer. Edith had brought delicious cakes as usual.

Feeding the birds
Thursday, 26th June
Just been out to lock the back gate and the scent of the honeysuckle is just heavenly.
Same in the morning when I open the door, the scent just wafts in.Reminds me of John, of course as we always used to sit outside in the evening when the honeysuckle was in bloom.
Helen came this morning.Discussed going to Bruges, then went to hers to check dates with Al.The ferry stops running in September, so hope we can get booked.Enjoyed the pasta she made.
Wednesday, 25th June
Jim, the gardener here early this morning. The grass being cut seems to make the herbaceous border even brighter. Lots of bees on the blue flowers, but still haven't seen a butterfly. Plenty birds around. I've noticed when I throw out food in the morning, first the seagulls snatch up the big pieces, then starlings, followed by the wee sparrows scratching about for what's left. Some of them sitting on the hedge just outside the kitchen window, so put some crusts there and got a super view of the sparrows and two coal tits when I was doing the dishes.
Margaret here later. Helped me put up light curtains in bedroom. Telling me about her new grandson, Calum. He seems a very contented wee soul. She gave me a lift to Rita's. Alex was out for a walk.He is feeling better, but quite tired when he came back. Finished reading"The Old Wives' Tale"by Arnold Bennett". Started "The Bottle Factory Outing" by Beryl Bainbridge.

Celebrations
Monday 22nd
Made soup in morning as Chris coming for lunch. Her arm is still very sore, but she's having the screws taken out on Thursday. Hope it's not too painful for her.
Ailie phoned to tell me she's passed her dancing exam.I'm going to send her a wee card. So glad Jonathan passed his piano exam last week. He was so worried about it. He's going to continue, but not aim for exams as he'll have enough next year with Standard Grades.
Sunday afternoon
At the Town House in Haddington for Douglas and Robert’s music concert. Arthur took me up and escorted me into the hall where I made sure I got a good view of the piano. The bairns all looked lovely, the girls wearing their party dresses and the boys all very smart. Robert was very escited as he has graduated to playing recorder and was
explaining his music to me! He did really well, but was dying to tell me he had made some mistakes but had just kept playing -a real wee trouper. Douglas was playing two minuets by Mozart and this time he didn’t need a stool for his feet! He’s doing really well and It must be quite daunting playing a grand piano! Anyway, I enjoyed all the performances from four year olds to six teen year olds,so again I had a magical, musical weekend.
Sunday 21st morning
Margo came early and we went to see John. The geraniums and French Marigolds Bobby planted are lovely and we put in his fresh flowers. He would have been so proud of all the bairns and what they were doing.I just wish he was here to share everything with me.Still miss him so much.
Saturday, 21st June
At strawberry tea in afternoon in the garden at the hall. While we were there the African Children’s Choir arrived as they were being given a meal in the hall. Was at their concert at night in the church and it was terrific! Their harmonies and choreography were perfect and they looked as if they were enjoying every minute. I can’t help feeling a wee bit uncomfortable about their situation though, as it seems an unnatural life for children, travelling all over the place, but they do have a base at their orphanage receiving a good educstion there.
14th June
Robert looked so smart and sweet at the Gala in East Linton. wearing his wee kilt.I thought the wee girls were lovely too, wearing simple white dresses with coloured sashes and carrying posies of wild flowers. Sat and watched the magician with Robert, while Kay and Gavin went looking for Douglas. He was an Artful Dodger on one of the floats and enjoyed himself hugely singing all the songs from Oliver as they went along.Went round some stalls, bought books then backhome to rest before going to Arthur’s.
Had a great time at Arthur’s at night but ate far too much and stayed far too late. It was about midnight before I got home! Really good party though, with plenty of laughs. great food and music. The boys were in great form, singing all the old favourites with everyone joining in. Sunday morning I couldn’t get up for church, I was soooo tired!
Week beginning 9th June
A week of celebrations! Rae, Christine and Kathleen here on Monday and Christine had baked a cake for my birthday which was on Wednesday 11th. Bobby’s birthday was on Friday 13th, Arthur’s fiftieth on Saturday, 14th and Robert was a page at East Linton Gala on Saturday afternoon! Pretty hectic, but I enjoyed every moment! Had a really happy birthday, the girls coming straight from school with the five bairns, bringing a chocolate birthday cake, lots of goodies and lovely pressies, so had great fun. Later on the boys arrived with flowers, cds etc. Helen sent me a really funny card and gave me a lovely hanging basket. Louise came in later with plant and nice card.
